About the Role

The Custodian plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment within the assigned Grand Rapids Housing Commission facilities. This position ensures that all assigned areas are properly cleaned and maintained to meet health and safety standards, contributing to the overall well-being of residents, employees, and visitors. The Custodian is responsible for performing routine janitorial duties, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, and waste disposal, while adhering to established safety protocols. This role requires attention to detail and the ability to follow both oral and written instructions to complete tasks efficiently and effectively. Ultimately, the Custodian supports the smooth operation of the facility by creating a welcoming and hygienic atmosphere.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and one (1) year of experience in cleaning and maintenance of building and grounds resulting in the ability to fulfill the essential job duties of the position.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic documents and instructions.
  • Basic math skills, including the ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers.
  • Physical capability to perform repetitive motions and tasks requiring balance, reaching with hands and arms, and manual dexterity with hands and fingers.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to safety rules and procedures.
  • Previous experience in janitorial or custodial duties is preferred but not required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a custodial or maintenance role within a commercial or institutional setting.
  • Familiarity with the safe use and handling of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to complete assigned tasks.
  • Basic knowledge of facility maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Certification in occupational safety or custodial training programs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and polishing floors and surfaces.
  • Empty trash receptacles and dispose of waste in accordance with safety and environmental guidelines.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, replenishing supplies as needed to maintain hygiene standards.
  • Follow safety rules and procedures to handle cleaning chemicals and equipment properly.
  • Read and interpret cleaning schedules, safety instructions, and maintenance documents to ensure compliance.
  • Report any maintenance issues or safety hazards to the appropriate personnel promptly.
  • Assist with setting up and breaking down furniture or equipment for events or meetings as required.
  • Maintain janitorial equipment and supplies, ensuring they are in good working order and stored safely.

  • Balancing skills to safely navigate various surfaces and environments while performing cleaning tasks.
  • Reading and interpreting documents, such as cleaning schedules and safety guidelines, to ensure duties are completed accurately and in compliance with regulations.

  • Basic math skills for measuring cleaning solutions or managing inventory supplies.
  • Manual dexterity and the ability to perform repetitive motions to efficiently operate cleaning equipment and complete detailed janitorial tasks.
