Custodian

About the role

Perform custodial duties independently or within a team environment as assigned, providing a high standard of cleanliness. This position is Monday through Friday, 5:00 pm – 1:30 am.

Responsibilities

• Change linens, make beds, and bunk/debunk beds.
• Check fire extinguishers and related equipment as scheduled and report deficiencies.
• Disinfect restrooms, showers, and locker rooms.
• Empty waste baskets and trash containers; gather and dispose of trash and foreign material from assigned areas (including building perimeters).
• Maintain current knowledge of bloodborne pathogen policies and procedures.
• May carry, distribute, and deliver custodial supplies and equipment.
• Minimize waste of cleaning supplies, paper, soap, and other materials.
• Open and close buildings, classrooms, offices, etc. in assigned areas.
• Remove snow and ice from entrances of assigned areas and apply salt as necessary.
• Replace light bulbs, globes, tubes, and light lenses.
• Replenish paper and soap products.
• Report needed maintenance on assigned equipment and repairs to supervisor or Physical Plant in emergencies.
• Respond to emergency custodial requests, including blood and body fluid cleanup.
• Set up tables, chairs, and other related furniture as needed.
• Sweep, wet-mop, refinish hard-surface floors, clean carpet, and vacuum.
• Utilize a household plunger to unplug commodes, urinals, and sink drains without dismantling fixtures.
• Wash walls, woodwork, windows, blinds, mirrors, bathroom fixtures, furniture, chalk/white boards, and climb ladders.
• Work with different cleaning chemicals and equipment, following safe-handling procedures and wearing assigned protective equipment.
• Operate a university or personal vehicle safely while carrying out job responsibilities; authorize driving record check and meet driving authorization requirements.
• Cultivate an environment of belonging that values, respects, supports, and celebrates individual similarities and differences.
• Support, promote, and develop university student enrollment and retention initiatives.
• Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalency.
• Custodial/janitorial work experience in a commercial/hospital/school environment in a commercial cleaning service or completion of the Ferris State University JANUS (custodial) training.
• Valid driver’s license.

Physical Demands

• Bending, carrying, climbing, driving, lifting, pulling/pushing, reaching, standing, twisting.
• Electrical hazards, inclement weather, moving, repetitive movement.
