Custodian

Part-time position, 12 hours per week. Non-exempt.

About the Role

Under the direction of the Pastor or other assigned manager, the Custodian is responsible for performing janitorial services and light maintenance in the parish, office, and other facilities. The employee shall be a minister of the Gospel and Catholic Teaching, demonstrating behavior aligned with these values both at work and in personal life, as stated in Ephesians 4:1: “Live in a manner worthy of the call you have received.”

Responsibilities

• Support the Church’s spiritual and pastoral mission.
• Abide by Catholic principles in professional and private life, adhering strictly to Catholic morals and principles.
• Follow a cleaning schedule to ensure the Church or school is clean and maintained in an orderly fashion.
• Perform general custodial duties, including cleaning and light maintenance of parish and office facilities.
• Assist the grounds person on an “as needed” basis.
• Perform scheduled monthly, semi-annual, or annual janitorial duties such as floor waxing, painting, window washing, and carpet cleaning, in accordance with the parish maintenance schedule.
• Provide set-up and cleaning of facilities for all activities as directed.
• Maintain a supply of cleaning materials and equipment; properly account for materials and tools.
• Maintain the security of buildings, equipment, and tools.
• Comply with safety regulations; maintain a safe working environment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Working knowledge of and strong commitment to the mission of the Diocese and Catholic Church; must be in full communion with the Catholic Church.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written; strong human relations and interpersonal skills.
• Courteous demeanor with fellow employees, parishioners, and the public.
• Self-starter with strong organizational skills; ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and work with a sense of urgency.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment; punctuality is essential.
• Ability to travel locally as required; weekend and overtime work may be necessary.
• Working familiarity with computer technology.
• Must successfully pass a background, criminal history, and credit history check.
• Possess a valid Arizona driver’s license.
• Ability to read directions and safety warnings; must be safety-conscious.
• Knowledge, skills, and experience in handling janitorial equipment and maintenance tools.
• Professional bearing and clean, neat personal appearance.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent education.
• One year of experience in commercial or private maintenance, janitorial, or similar position.

Physical and Mental Requirements

• Requires coordination and manual dexterity; normal mental and visual ability.
• Ability to lift as required in a normal maintenance environment.
• Required activities include: walking, sitting, standing, stooping, reaching, talking, handling, hearing, carrying, and climbing ladders.
