About the Role

The Custodian assists the custodial staff in maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for students and staff. This role involves performing a variety of custodial tasks, potentially supervising part-time or temporary staff, and responding to building maintenance needs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily duties in assigned areas, including:
    • Dusting all flat surfaces
    • Emptying wastebaskets and pencil sharpeners
    • Sweeping floors and straightening desks
    • Mopping and spot mopping
    • Cleaning equipment and replacing supplies
    • Cleaning and servicing restrooms
    • Sweeping hallways, stairs, and landings
    • Lowering the flag if necessary
    • Cleaning gym, locker room, and auditorium
    • Assisting with lunchroom clean-up
  • Perform weekly duties, including:
    • Buffing and high dusting
    • Carpet spotting
    • Replacing light bulbs as needed
    • Stripping, sealing, and waxing floors
    • Washing walls and furniture
    • Cleaning carpets
  • Perform energy management functions, such as:
    • Turning off day lights and turning on night lights
    • Turning off water in urinals
    • Unplugging water fountains
  • Consult with the Building Custodial Supervisor regarding school activities and community use of the building to arrange needed services and cleaning.
  • Respond to office and staff requests, including setting up TVs, DVRs, audio systems, and other equipment.
  • Report building maintenance needs, supplies, and equipment needs to the Building Custodial Supervisor.
  • Secure assigned areas by checking windows, doors, and lights before leaving. If the only custodian on the second shift, secure the entire building.
  • Remove marks from floors and graffiti from walls as needed.
  • Spray buff hard surface floors as requested.
  • Perform recycling-related duties as requested.
  • Respond to emergencies appropriately.
  • Assist with additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Equipment Used

  • Hand tools of the trade and related power equipment, including:
    • Brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines
    • Vacuum cleaners
    • Snow blowers and shovels
    • Power mowers and hand tools
  • SMART boards and iPads
  • Basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machines

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents, contaminated trash, grasses, pollens, etc.
  • Must meet the required level on the Physical Capacity Profile (PCP), including:
    • Climbing stairs and/or ladders
    • Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally
    • Exerting 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently
    • Exerting 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly
    • Squatting, bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, and pulling
  • Attendance at required meetings.
  • Overtime may be required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Completion of Proficiency of Custodial Operations certificate preferred.

  • Contact with personnel within the district, customers, and vendors.
  • Works under the direct supervision of the department supervisor to complete daily tasks.
  • Works with a diverse population, requiring tact and diplomacy.
  • Understands and responds appropriately to customer needs while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Interacts with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner, providing quick, responsive customer service.

Employee Punctuality and Appearance

  • Expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday unless approved leave is obtained.
  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the supervisor or building administrator.
  • Required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of USD 259 and is appropriate for the position.
