Custodian - 2nd Shift - Facilities Planning and Management
This position is a regular, second-shift role within the Department of Facilities Planning and Management at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The custodian will report to the Custodial Services Program Manager and work under the guidance of the Custodian Assistant Supervisor. Regular attendance is essential. The role is designated at Level 1 for risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens, requiring adherence to safety rules and use of personal protective equipment. Occasional overtime and schedule changes may be required, including evenings and weekends. An initial 1-2 week training period will be Monday-Friday, 6:00am-2:00pm, with normal working hours afterward being Monday-Friday, 12:00pm-8:00pm (flexible start times of 12:00pm, 1:00pm, 2:00pm, or 3:00pm may be considered).
Responsibilities
- Routine daily maintenance of academic buildings:
- Clean restrooms, showers, and locker rooms.
- Clean classrooms, whiteboards, trays, and erasers.
- Clean and dust office areas.
- Empty wastebaskets and remove trash from buildings.
- Replenish supplies as necessary.
- Vacuum and spot-clean carpets.
- Sweep and/or dust mop floors.
- Wet mop or machine scrub floors.
- Clean hallways, stairwells, and drinking fountains.
- Clean and sweep entryways and walk-off mats; empty ash urns.
- Wash walls, ceilings, inside windows, and glass building entrances.
- Replace bulbs, clean light fixtures, and replace diffusers.
- Open and secure buildings/rooms as assigned.
- Performance of related duties:
- Clean and maintain equipment and storage areas.
- Report needed maintenance or repairs to supervisor via work request.
- Move furniture, equipment, and supplies as required.
- Inspect exterior building entrances for trash and dispose of appropriately.
- Provide snow removal from building entrances and surrounding sidewalks.
- Strip and refinish floor surfaces as needed.
- Shampoo all carpeted areas and clean entry mats.
- Drive University vehicles if authorized.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Team participation:
- Function as a member of a team in special projects (e.g., relamping, tarping floors, seasonal cleaning).
- Collaborate in problem-solving for custodial and other areas.
- Assist other departments/employees as required.
- Perform set-ups and tear-downs for events involving movement of equipment, workshops, sports events, etc.
- Clean areas between events.
Requirements
- Ability to work collaboratively with co-workers, staff, and students.
- Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Ability to independently organize and prioritize workload.
- Knowledge of commercial cleaning methods, solutions, agents, equipment, and materials.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Ability to work independently.
- Willingness and ability to actively participate in following applicable safety rules and regulations, including necessary training and drills.
Pay
Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting hourly wage of $17.00/hr.
