Custodial Worker Leader

About the role

This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Field Organization, Plains Area (PA), National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF).

Responsibilities

• Serves as a working leader for the staff responsible for performing the full range of custodial duties.
• Works with the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor of the Facilities Service Group and the other supervisors of the Group in the coordination of activities.
• Assigns tasks to be performed and addresses priority situations in absence of supervisory instructions.
• Demonstrates proper work methods and ensures plans, materials, tools, and supplies are available.
• Resolves problems and obtains additional information or decisions from supervisor when required.
• Provides information and answers questions on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives. Trains staff as needed.
• Cleans offices, corridors, stairways, fairways, cafeteria, and other areas.
• Adjusts, cleans, oils, changes brushes, rollers, buffers, and other attachments on cleaning machines.
• Observes and ensures staff awareness of safety and housekeeping rules and proper use of personal protective equipment.
• Ensures adherence to conduct, safety, fire, equipment care, housekeeping rules and regulations.

Requirements

Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt. Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check. Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement:

• Must demonstrate through experience and training the ability to perform the duties of a Custodial Worker Leader without more than normal supervision.

Physical Effort

The incumbent operates and controls floor maintenance machines; moves and controls moderately heavy equipment; and carries, sets up, and works from ladders. Work requires frequently lifting and moving objects weighing 40 and occasionally 50 pounds with appropriate support. In addition, the work requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting, and moderate to heavy physical effort when mopping or moving furniture. The work also requires regularly shoveling snow off of walks. The work requires exposure to a large variety of cleaning agents.

Working Conditions

• Work is usually performed in offices, rest rooms/lavatories, common public areas and stairways, warehouses, and/or outdoor facilities.
• Exposure to strong cleaning solutions, disagreeable odors, exposure to hot and cold conditions, high noise and vibration levels, and occasionally, harmful biological, chemical, and physical agents.
• Chance of minor injuries (cuts and bruises) and caution and adherence to instruction must be taken to avoid serious injuries when working from ladders and scaffolds and powered equipment.
• Protective devices such as gloves, goggles, face mask, or respirators and immunizations may be required.

Special Physical Requirements/Demands

• SAC and full background investigation required for positions working with BSL-3 (or higher) agents, or in BSL-3/BSL-4 facilities.
• Department of Justice (DOJ) Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval is required.
• Immunizations may be required.
• Respirator fitting and certification is required.
