About the Role
Educate students on the scientific principles underlying physical activity, exercise, and health. This role involves creating and delivering engaging lesson plans, conducting practical sessions, and assessing student performance while fostering a positive learning environment that encourages lifelong interest in health and fitness.
Responsibilities
- Curriculum Development: Develop and deliver comprehensive lesson plans in exercise science, covering anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, and exercise psychology.
- Instruction: Incorporate lectures, practical demonstrations, hands-on activities, and technology/multimedia resources to enhance learning.
- Student Assessment and Evaluation: Assess performance through written exams, practical assessments, and projects. Provide constructive feedback and maintain accurate records of progress and grades.
- Classroom Management: Create an inclusive environment that encourages participation. Manage behavior, ensure safety, and address issues promptly.
- Professional Development: Stay updated with research in exercise science and physical education. Attend workshops, conferences, and collaborate with colleagues.
- Extracurricular Activities: Support school events, sports teams, and fitness clubs. Organize activities promoting physical health and wellness.
- Legal Duties:
- Duty to Instruct: Explain and demonstrate potential problems and safety measures for each experience to prevent accidents.
- Duty of Supervision: Maintain classroom control and ensure student safety. Act as the responsible adult during educational experiences.
- Duty to Maintain: Ensure equipment is kept in safe working order according to state and federal laws. Instruct and demonstrate safe operating procedures for all tools and equipment.
- Managing Risk:
- Plan ahead for potential dangers and maintain order in the classroom/lab.
- Teach respect for inherent dangers in the lab/shop.
- Never leave students unattended or delegate responsibility to a student (e.g., TA).
- Ensure students pass a general shop safety test with 100% and sign a safety agreement before using equipment.
- Obtain signed parent awareness documents before students use equipment.
- In case of an accident: call 911, provide emergency care, complete an incident report, and review it with the student for learning purposes.
- Maintain personal copies of records and affidavits.
- Ensure classes are not overloaded.
- Conduct: Serve as a role model for students, adhering to ethical principles and democratic values. Remain free of alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substances in the workplace.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine, Exercise Physiology, Physical Education, Health Education, Athletic Training, or equivalent with 30 semester hours in a technical area related to program content.
- Industry Certification: Current Certified Strength and Fitness Specialist, Licensed Physical Therapist, Physical Therapy Assistant, or Licensed Athletic Trainer.
- Certification: Valid teaching certification or license (industry experience may substitute in some cases; license can be obtained with school sponsorship).
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in the Exercise Science industry, including physical education.
