About the Role

The Radiologic Technologist/Sonographer must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit’s/area/department’s policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Provide radiographic and sonographic examinations of all body parts for diagnostic interpretation.
• Exercise professional judgment in performance of procedures, applying principles of radiation protection.
• Perform diagnostic medical radiography/sonography within the department and other areas.
• Maintain patient records and files.
• Assume responsibility for the departmental quality assurance program.
• Pursue continuing education.
• Transfer patients to and from radiology.
• In the absence of a supervisor, assume responsibility for the department.
• Rotate shifts as required.
• Perform ancillary duties as requested by the supervisor.
• Follow policies and procedures set by SEARHC Administration.
• Assist in the general hygiene of the department.
• Work effectively in high-stress situations.
• Be available for on-call duties and report to work within 20 minutes.
• Learn other imaging modalities as directed by the Manager.
• Perform duties in two fields of imaging and work outside of primary modality (e.g., Ultrasound, MRI, CT, Mammography).
• Maintain competency in ancillary modalities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Mammography

• Perform breast needle localization, specimen radiography, quality control, screening, diagnostic mammography, and stereotactic breast biopsy.
• Actively pursue five CEUs in Mammography credits per year, documented per ACR/FDA requirements.
• Perform 100 mammograms per year, documented per ACR/FDA requirements.

Ultrasound

• Perform all requested exams for diagnostic interpretation by a radiologist.
• Pursue RDMS certification (Abd, OB/GYN, RVT, RDCS) and continuing education to fulfill requirements.
• Maintain care of transducers and neatness of the work area.
• Handle paperwork accompanying procedures and assist with ultrasound invasive procedures.
• Participate in policy and procedure preparation and consult with referring physicians.
• Maintain the Trophon station and assist with accreditation efforts.

MRI

• Perform all requested MRI procedures or improvise with new studies.
• Maintain care of coils and paperwork accompanying procedures.
• Participate in policy and procedure preparation and consult with referring physicians.
• Perform venipuncture, ensure magnet safety for patients and staff, and execute quench procedures.
• Maintain the MRI area, including cleaning and processor care, and perform daily/weekly quality control.

CT/Interventional

• Maintain care of equipment and records in this area.
• Assist with invasive procedures and understand their protocols.
• Participate in the preparation of procedures and consult with referring physicians.
• Perform venipuncture and follow standard precautions.
• Adjust routine protocols for pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients, including contrast levels.
• Set up and operate automatic injectors, and understand contrast contraindications.
• Demonstrate competency in tele-radiology transmission and sterile technique.
• Assist in supply inventory and ordering, and perform daily/weekly quality control.

Lead Technologist

• Work with the Imaging Manager and Director to support organizational goals.
• Review, edit, correct, and validate PACS to ensure accurate patient procedure image labeling.
• Organize and ensure efficient workflow, assign daily staffing schedules, and respond to staff concerns promptly.
• Identify and solve operational problems, assist in hiring staff, and coordinate new staff orientation.
• Serve as an expert resource for staff on clinical, technical, or process questions.

Secondary Functions

• Attend department/organizational meetings, in-services, and disaster drills.

Requirements

• Current ARRT in Radiography or current ARDMS in one category (Abd or OB/GYN).
• BLS certification required within 45 days of start.
• Clinical Competency required within 3 months of hire and every three years.

Qualifications

Based on certifications, technologists are classified as follows:

• Tech I: ARRT or ARDMS in one modality (e.g., ARRT general radiography or ARDMS one category).
• Tech II: ARRT (CT, MR, MG, NM) or ARDMS certified in two modalities/categories (e.g., OB/GYN, Abd).
• Tech III: ARRT (CT, MR, MG, NM) or ARDMS certified in three modalities/categories (e.g., RVT or RDCS).
• Tech IV: ARRT (CT, MR, MG, NM) or ARDMS certified in four modalities/categories (e.g., RVT or RDCS).

Additional Information

• Travel may be required to provide services to various SEARHC sites.
• Required Certifications: American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association, Clinical Competency Assessment - SEARHC.
