Critical Home Repair Construction Assistant

About the role

As a Critical Home Repair Construction Assistant, you'll play an integral role in Habitat Charlotte Region’s vision of a world where everyone has a safe and affordable place to live. You will preserve homes for families in need by performing and managing tasks related to repairing homes, while upholding standards of partnership, quality, safety, and team participation.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the preservation of homes by repairing owner-occupied houses through the Habitat Charlotte Home Repair Program.
• Execute all aspects of home repair, from demolition to final inspections and punch list completion.
• Serve as a friend, mentor, and trainer to volunteers and homeowners, patiently instructing and encouraging participation.
• Promote partnership among all participants, addressing the needs and concerns of homeowners and enhancing communication between staff, volunteers, and homeowners.
• Perform team-priority tasks and assist in planning service days to ensure all necessary resources (material and human) are available.
• Follow Habitat Charlotte’s building methods as outlined in the Approved Methods Construction Manual.
• Maintain Habitat equipment as assigned and complete tasks on time.
• Demonstrate willingness and ability to work alongside diverse groups of people within a commitment to the Habitat program.
• Act as an effective team member, communicating openly and maintaining respect for others while fostering positive relationships with staff, volunteers, homeowners, inspectors, and sub-contractors.
• Remain flexible and adaptable to changing needs.
• Acquire and maintain knowledge of building standards and methods.
• Organize and follow through with tasks, showing initiative and a willingness to learn.
• Demonstrate a positive and respectful attitude when interacting with employees, homeowners, volunteers, and the public.
• Ensure regular and reliable attendance and adhere to the schedule.
• Represent Habitat in a positive, professional manner and adhere to Habitat’s Code of Conduct and other policies.
• Perform other Habitat Charlotte Region tasks as requested by your supervisor.

Requirements

• Dependable transportation to work.
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

Qualifications

Physical Requirements

• Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding, work and maneuver on roofs and high spaces.
• Ability to work in tight confines and within crawlspaces, wearing a respirator as needed.
• Ability to maneuver over uneven ground.
• Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. unassisted.
• Ability to stand most or all of any given day.
• Ability to work outside for extended periods during all months of the year.

Interactions

• Internal: Construction staff and other Habitat staff as needed.
• External: Habitat volunteers, donors, and homeowners.

Schedule

40 hours/week; Monday - Friday, approximately 7:00am-4:00pm. Exact starting times may vary depending on the time of year, weather, and construction schedule.
