Critical Care Technician - General ICU

About the Role

The Critical Care Technician (CCT) is a certified and/or licensed technician who collaborates as part of the Intensive Care Department patient care team. Working in a complementary and assistive role with nursing, the CCT performs RN-delegated tasks under the supervision of the Registered Nurse and assists the nursing staff in providing patient care according to training, competence, and skill.

The CCT is knowledgeable of and follows all hospital policies and procedures, helping maintain a clean, well-organized, adequately stocked, and safe patient environment. The CCT also performs all unit clerk/clerical duties for the unit.

Responsibilities

• Meets expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
• Assists RN with admission, transfer, and discharge of patients as required.
• Observes patient’s condition, recognizes changes in patient status, and reports findings to the RN (commensurate with training).
• Cleans, procures, and returns equipment and supplies.
• Under the direction of the RN, operates patient monitoring equipment, records, and runs rhythm strips.
• Assists with ordering and maintaining stock items.
• Charts in the electronic Health Record as appropriate.
• Maintains competency to perform special procedures, including:
  • Foley catheter insertion and removal
  • Venipuncture and laboratory specimen collection as ordered
  • Removal of saline lock
  • Staple and suture removal
  • Non-sterile dressing changes
  • Peak expiration flow rate
  • Pulse oximetry
  • Point of Care Testing
  • Vital sign recordings
• Performs patient care duties, including:
  • Obtaining and documenting vital signs
  • Providing patient hygiene
  • Maintaining clear and respectful communications with patients, families, and the healthcare team
• Demonstrates competence in assigned patient care responsibilities, meeting the population-specific and developmental needs of patients served.
• Adapts patient assessment, treatment, and care methods to accommodate unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age-specific, and developmental needs.
• Performs clerical duties, including:
  • Accurately processing the transcription of orders for the patient plan of care
  • Timely and accurate notification related to transcription of orders
  • Making interdepartmental requests and following up as required
  • Assisting clinical staff with admission, transfer, discharge, and returning surgical/post-procedure patients
  • Obtaining diagnostic test results and immediately providing them to nursing staff
  • Performing quality assurance on charts (verifying correct filing, labeling, order transcription, allergy documentation, and form processing)
  • Responding timely to staff, patient, and visitor requests

• Takes personal responsibility to ensure compliance with all policies, procedures, and standards as promulgated by state and federal agencies, the hospital, and other regulatory entities.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Previous experience in hospital patient care or an acute-care setting preferred.

Qualifications

• BLS certification required.
• Current in ONE of the following certifications required:
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
  • Patient Care Tech (PCT)
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic
