About the Role

This position works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. The Critical Care Tech (CCT) performs and assists with individual activities of daily living as well as certain treatments for patient care under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse according to established policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the nurse, prioritizes and organizes care of assigned patients, performing basic nurse’s aide skills as outlined in orientation, competencies, policy, and procedures.
  • Documents on patient’s chart any treatments and pertinent observations. Provides report to team on tasks completed.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and orderly unit.
  • Supports the mission, goals, policies, and standards of nursing, Medical Center, and unit policies and work rules.
  • Performs according to procedure in all Medical Center emergency situations.
  • Provides and ensures a safe and secure environment for the patient.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and courtesy at all times.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of reading, writing, mathematical, and computer skills.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels.
  • Competency in Microsoft Windows.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

Qualifications

Must hold one of the following certifications or qualifications:

  • Internal MyMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification, or
  • Current State of Michigan registry document as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or
  • Completion of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification culminating in licensure in the state of Michigan, or
  • Completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program culminating in licensure in the State of Michigan, or
  • Successful completion of one semester of nursing clinical education by an Accredited Registered Nurse Program.
  • Effective 11/22/2019, acceptance of a Medical Assistant with one of the following credentials:
    • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologist (AMT), or
    • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), or
    • Equivalent Medical Assistant Credential such as Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), etc.

For current PCTs with an expired CNA certification, EMT certification, or a lapsed LPN license, an opportunity to achieve an internal MyMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification will be offered.

Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from AHA within 3 months of hire or transfer.
  • Techniques for Effective Aggression Management (TEAM ADVANCED) certification within 6 months of hire or transfer (Employees in this position on or before 8/1/2024 will have 24 months to complete this certification).

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment, including latex materials or appropriate substitutes.
  • Must be able to move freely about the facility with or without an assisted device.
  • Overall vision and hearing necessary, with or without assisted devices.
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, or walk for long periods; may require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials; must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing requirements.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular and predictable attendance, and stay awake.
  • Overall dexterity required, including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling; may require repetition of these movements.
  • Physical Demand Level: Medium.
    • Occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs.
    • Frequently (34-66% of the workday) lift or carry 20 lbs.
    • Constantly (67-100% of the workday) lift or carry 10 lbs.
