Critical Care Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner

About the Role

The APC, in consultation and collaboration with physicians and other members of the Clinical Care Team, primarily provides procedural services to the general hospital population but also provides comprehensive Critical Care to a mixed medical-surgical ICU population. The APC is expected to have the highest standards for clinical capability, professional education, quality improvement, and overall patient care.

Responsibilities

• Assess patients and perform procedures in an acute care setting in collaboration with a supervising physician.
• Perform procedures as clinically indicated, including but not limited to: intubation, point of care ultrasound, central vascular catheter insertion (including hemodialysis catheters), arterial line insertion, paracentesis, thoracentesis, lumbar puncture, and other common bedside procedures.
• Assist in the acute and chronic care management of a diverse mixed medical-surgical ICU population by conducting thorough medical histories, performing physical examinations, initiating appropriate diagnostic evaluation, analyzing/interpreting key clinical data, and counseling patients and their families.
• Participate in division meetings, conferences, related continuing education, and ongoing quality improvement review.
• Function as a faculty member to Graduate Medical Education (GME) trainees.
• Flexibility to work evenings and weekends.
• Assist in the establishment and accomplishment of division goals and objectives.

Qualifications

• Current California licensure.
• BLS and ACLS certification.
• For NPs: National Board Certification in Acute Care and a Furnishing Number.
• For PAs: certification through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and DEA licensure.
• Minimum two (2) years of experience as an APC in Critical Care and prior procedural experience preferred.
• Objective judgment and willingness to work in a Multidisciplinary Care Team setting.
• Able to work at highest level of licensure.
• Manual dexterity and hand/eye coordination to perform physical exams and bedside procedures.
• Comfortable with the use of an electronic medical record (EPIC), currently or after adequate training.
• Respectful of and respected by colleagues and ancillary staff.
• Strong, adaptable communicator.

Pay & Benefits

• Estimated base compensation $160,000/year.
