About the role

This position is part of a multidisciplinary team that provides comprehensive care to individuals experiencing acute psychiatric crisis. The registered nurse role involves rapid assessment, crisis intervention, de-escalation, medication administration, and coordination of care in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. The RN provides services to adult individuals with severe and persistent mental illness in a 24/7 facility.

The RN collaborates closely with psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the safety and stabilization of individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Perform initial and ongoing mental health and physical assessments of individuals in crisis.
  • Administer medications, including psychotropic drugs, and monitor for efficacy and side effects.
  • Provide therapeutic interventions including crisis de-escalation and therapeutic communications.
  • Monitor and maintain a safe and secure therapeutic environment.
  • Document care provided and interventions accurately in the electronic medical record.
  • Participate in team meetings and case reviews.
  • Educate individuals and families about mental health conditions, treatment options, and discharge along with aftercare planning.
  • Provide assistance as needed for other services, including supported housing, employment services, and co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders (COPSD).
  • Deliver evidence-based services to assist individuals in maintaining or improving their ability to function in the community and work towards their recovery goals.

Requirements

  • Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas.
  • Prefer at least one year of Mental Health Nursing experience.
  • Must have a valid Texas Driver License and a good driving record.
  • Prefer at least one year of case management experience.
  • Two years of inpatient nursing is preferred.
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license.

Skills

  • Knowledge of community resources, case management principles, objectives, standards, methods, and program policies and procedures.
  • Ability to complete detailed, yet concise progress notes on all services provided during sessions.
  • Knowledge and experience in providing rehabilitative services to individuals with mental illness.
  • Ability to assess individual needs, coordinate services, communicate effectively, and train others.
  • Knowledge of the social services system and the ability to connect clients with appropriate services.
  • Ability to write clearly and professionally.
  • Ability to think clearly and logically to deal with potentially dangerous and/or emotional situations.
  • Working knowledge of Behavioral Health medications (antipsychotics, antidepressants, psychotropic agents, mood stabilizers, and anticonvulsants).
