About the role

The Crime Scene Specialist is responsible for processing crime scenes, collecting and preserving physical evidence, and documenting findings through photography, sketches, and detailed reports. This role supports law enforcement investigations by ensuring the integrity of evidence from the scene to the courtroom.

Responsibilities

• Respond to crime scenes to identify, document, collect, and preserve physical evidence.
• Photograph and sketch crime scenes, including overall, mid-range, and close-up views with scales.
• Collect, package, and label evidence such as fingerprints, biological samples, trace evidence, and firearms.
• Perform latent fingerprint processing using powders, chemicals, and alternate light sources.
• Prepare detailed written reports documenting observations, actions taken, and evidence collected.
• Maintain chain of custody for all evidence to ensure admissibility in court.
• Testify in court as an expert witness regarding evidence collection and processing methods.
• Operate and maintain specialized equipment, including cameras, fingerprint kits, and evidence collection tools.
• Collaborate with law enforcement officers, detectives, and forensic scientists during investigations.
• Stay current with advancements in forensic science and crime scene processing techniques.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, or related field preferred.
• Completion of a law enforcement or forensic training program in crime scene processing.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to respond to crime scenes as needed.
• Knowledge of forensic principles, evidence collection techniques, and legal procedures.
• Ability to work in challenging environments, including exposure to biohazards and adverse weather conditions.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow strict protocols.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing and court testimony.
• Physical ability to lift and carry equipment, stand for extended periods, and work in confined spaces.
