About the role
This position is a Crew Leader for the SL3 Welding & Fabrication Department. The Crew Leader leads crews and performs essential tasks within their assigned department, acting as the point of contact between supervisors and employees to complete manufacturing of finished and in-process goods. This role assists in supervisory tasks and works hands-on with crews to ensure safety and smooth project completion.
Responsibilities
- Carry out operational schedules and coordinate manufacturing activities.
- Review production and aid in resolving operational, manufacturing, and maintenance problems to ensure minimum costs and prevent operational delays.
- Work with shop employees and maintenance personnel to ensure tooling and equipment are in good working condition.
- Ensure worn or damaged tooling and equipment are replaced in a timely manner.
- Communicate supervisor adjustments to crews and make necessary changes to resolve problems.
- Work with supervisors and crews to solve problems relating to meeting dispatches or schedules.
- Follow dispatch rules unless otherwise directed for all work centers within the department.
- Suggest and implement changes in working conditions and equipment use to increase efficiency.
- Promote work on 5S, lean initiatives, and continual improvement projects.
- Follow and enforce company policies, standards, and employee relations.
- Adhere to safety, quality, production, and environmental policies.
- Observe employees to ensure compliance with company standards and policies.
- Cooperate and communicate openly with other departments and supervisors.
- Complete all accident/incident reports and required paperwork in the absence of the supervisor.
- Promote safe working habits and a safe, healthy work environment.
- Resolve employee grievances and differences, and promote teamwork within the department.
- Initiate and record disciplinary action when necessary according to company policies.
- Provide feedback for employee evaluations.
- Record and maintain accurate employee time, absenteeism, PTO records, and schedule personnel shifts in the absence of the supervisor.
- Lead by example and mentor employees to develop their skills.
- Ensure employees perform all required daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly preventive maintenance (PMs).
- Follow through with specific corrective actions relating to monthly quality and safety meetings.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) preferred.
- 1-3 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to effectively communicate and present information in one-on-one or small group situations.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure.
- Ability to read and understand blueprints and technical drawings.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.

- Ability to meet daily physical demands and required work hours, including overtime.

Safety Requirements & Physical Demands
- Must sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to read, see, hear, and speak English.
- Frequent physical exertion, including lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying up to 50 pounds (larger amounts with assistance).
- May need to operate a crane and forklift.
- Work location includes a warehouse and fabrication shop setting with exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and loud noises.
- Limited exposure to outdoor elements (extreme heat, cold temperatures, snow, ice, etc.).
- Use of tools including basic hand tools, saws, grinders, mills, lathes, bending tools, drill press, band saw, scale, and stamping tools.
- Must wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) including gloves, safety glasses, ear protection, and steel-toed boots (steel-toed boots are not provided by the company).
- Must give full attention to all tasks and follow all safety policies, practices, and guidelines.
- Must identify hazards and unusual circumstances and assist in the continual improvement of safety practices and procedures.
- Participate in safety training programs, ask questions, share and apply learning, and request help if needed to work safely.
