Crew Leader - (DPW)
About the Role
The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) aims to improve residents’ quality of life through bettering public spaces and infrastructure, and through providing excellent public services. With a focus on multi-modal connectivity, thriving green spaces, meaningful capital improvements, universal accessibility, and collaborative public and private partnerships, DPW builds and maintains public infrastructure and park land; manages solid waste collection; and keeps the City’s entire vehicle fleet rolling.
This position is responsible for planning and leading the job site work effort, including coordination of materials, equipment, and crew members. The role functions as a working member of the crew while coordinating and leading crew activities, encouraging problem-solving to improve work outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Plan and lead the job site work effort, including coordination of materials, equipment, and crew members.
- Function as a working member of the crew while coordinating and leading crew functions.
- Encourage problem-solving among crew members to create a better work product.
- Report daily production results and participate as a working crew member.
- Operate a variety of light and heavy construction equipment, such as loaders, backhoes, graders, dump trucks, asphalt pavers, asphalt planers, and rollers.
- Direct supervision of staff.
Requirements
- High School education or equivalent.
- At least four (4) years of related work experience.
- Valid Class B CDL Driver’s License (Class A preferred).
- Must pass a pre-employment physical.
- Ability to lift and carry items weighing 25 pounds or more.
- Basic computer operation skills may be required.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed both inside and outside with exposure to varying weather conditions.
- May be exposed to intermittent noise, dust, dirt, odors, solvents, heights, and confined spaces.
- Use of safety equipment required, including safety glasses, hearing protection, safety vest, hard hats, and work boots.
- Overtime work may be required.
