Crew Coordinator - Wastewater/First Response

Examples of Duties

  • Removes blockages from customer and City sewer lines; washes sewer pipes.
  • Assigns work and gives specific instruction to semi-skilled and unskilled workers performing a wide variety of tasks.
  • Operates sewer jets, vac trucks, camera systems, and other vehicles and equipment daily.
  • Performs pre-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment; ensures the truck is properly stocked.
  • Sets up and maintains safe work zones; ensures crew has appropriate protective equipment prior to entering work zone.
  • Enters work on computer and turns in written reports for various departments, fills out regulatory reports documenting incidents for the state including SSO reports.
  • May include pick and shovel work in digging and back filling trenches, laying pipe, repairing City clean-out stacks, operating pneumatic tools, loading and unloading materials, locating manholes, spreading straw and lime, turning soil on SSOs, or performing general utility maintenance and construction work.
  • Supervises other laboring work including manual work or simple semi-skilled tasks.
  • Reviews work in progress and upon completion keeps all necessary records.

Typical Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and department policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and departmental legal guides, recommendations, best practices, ordinances, and laws.
  • Thorough knowledge of industry standard and department specific equipment.
  • General knowledge of standard office and department specific software.
  • Ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to lead a crew of workers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Education and Experience

  • A high school diploma or GED and moderate experience in construction or maintenance and writing reports and using computer systems, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience operating sewer jets, vac trucks and camera systems is preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force.
  • Work regularly requires walking, speaking or hearing, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions.
  • Frequently requires standing, sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel and tasting or smelling.
  • Occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and lifting.
  • Work has standard vision requirements.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Work regularly requires exposure to bloodborne pathogens, wearing specialized personal protective equipment, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to fumes or airborne particles and occasionally requires exposure to vibration.
  • Work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
