About the role
Through examinations and monitoring, Credit Review provides an independent assessment of credit decisions and the effectiveness of credit processes across the bank’s credit platform. This role identifies existing and emerging risks and reports findings to executive management, the Board of Directors, external auditors, and regulatory agencies.
The Senior Examiner participates in credit review examinations and continuous testing activities across various commercial credit portfolios within Enterprise Credit. This individual assesses the quality of credit decisioning, portfolio management, risk recognition practices, and the effectiveness of credit management processes. The role involves reviewing complex transactions, leading special projects, and supporting ongoing testing and assessments of structured transactions and counterparty credit risk within Global Markets, Financial Institutions, and Global Wealth and Investment Management portfolios.
Functional responsibilities include establishing Monitoring Plans, assessing risk ratings, acting as Examiner-in-Charge, and implementing credit review strategies. The role influences senior business managers, drives credit issue resolution, and helps balance business strategy with risk management controls. The Senior Examiner also contributes to Credit Review’s missions, goals, and strategies, interacts with regulatory agencies, and assesses industry-level and geo-political trends.
Responsibilities
- Performs transactional testing of credit process execution for new and existing clients
- Supports conclusions through fact-based analysis, proposing suggestions and influencing senior leaders
- Participates in examination activities, occasionally leading exams
- Identifies, assesses, and reports on existing and emerging risks
- Drives a culture of continuous improvement by leading or participating in complex or multiple projects
- Achieves continuous testing goals by producing quality, timely work
- Maintains well-written, easy-to-follow work papers in accordance with Credit Review guidelines and best practices
- Raises potential areas of concern for QA team review
- Actively engages with Corporate Audit to ensure ongoing awareness of review activity, coordination, and risk assessment
- Supports enterprise initiatives related to operational excellence and adoption of AI tools
Requirements
- 10+ years of direct commercial credit experience
- Bachelor’s Degree with a preference in finance, accounting, economics, or other business concentration
- 5+ years of commercial credit experience (direct lending, workout, risk management, and/or regulatory)
- Ability to support conclusions through fact-based analysis and influence senior leaders
- Excellent credit analysis, project management, and leadership skills
- Strong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to manage multiple complex tasks while delivering high-quality results
- Expert financial analysis skills
- Deep knowledge of loan structuring and underwriting
- Experience in credit and risk assessment
- Issue management and resolution skills
- Strong knowledge of regulatory compliance
- Excellent skills in building and maintaining business relationships
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in identifying, assessing, and reporting on existing and emerging risks
- Experience with direct applicability to Credit Review responsibilities
- Ability to coach/mentor new or less experienced associates
- Strong Counterparty Credit Risk background and/or Global Markets experience preferred
