Crane Operator

About the Role

Crane Operators are responsible for safely maneuvering overhead cranes to transport raw materials, intermediate products, and finished goods throughout the plant. They ensure timely and precise movement of materials, contributing to the smooth workflow and productivity of the steel manufacturing process while adhering to strict safety protocols.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to all safety regulations outlined in the Plant Employee Manual for the protection of personnel and facility integrity.
• Ensure punctuality and adherence to attendance policies as outlined in the Plant Employee Manual.
• Conduct thorough inspections of crane equipment and surrounding areas at the commencement of each shift.
• Utilize two-way radio communication to coordinate with crane operators for efficient coil location.
• Execute coil-cutting procedures as needed for sampling purposes.
• Attach and manage inventory tags as part of inventory control processes.
• Deliver scheduled materials to designated staging or operational areas as specified.
• Facilitate the movement of processed coils to support packaging line operations when necessary.
• Transport materials for Shipping/Receiving/Material Handling as required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
• Demonstrated capability to work safely and efficiently in a dynamic production environment.
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and sustain prolonged periods of standing on a concrete floor.
• Strong communication skills and teamwork for effective collaboration.
• Proficiency in utilizing tape measures, micrometers, and calipers.
• Valid forklift driver's license, with the ability to operate within specified capacities and conduct necessary inspections.
• Competence in operating and performing inspections on all overhead cranes within the facility.
• Familiarity with various lift devices such as ID lifters (skids), spreader bars, "C" hooks, sheet lifters, etc.
• Ability to effectively utilize Stratix Software.

Physical and Mental Requirements

• Maintain prolonged periods of physical activity, including standing, walking, and operating machinery.
• Precision hand-eye coordination for handling equipment and materials effectively.
• Capability to lift, carry, and manipulate heavy items.
• Resilience in enduring repetitive tasks and sustaining focus over extended periods.
• Ability to hear warning signals and communicate effectively in a noisy environment.
• Clear vision for inspecting materials and reading gauges accurately.
• Problem-solving skills for troubleshooting and resolving operational issues.

Tools and Equipment

• Eligibility for a hi-lo license.
• Proficiency in utilizing calipers, tape measures, micrometers, hand tools, and plasma cutters.
• Familiarity with telecommunications, computers, and overhead crane operation.

Working Conditions

• Exposure to moving machinery, heavy equipment, and sharp objects in a steel manufacturing facility.
• Work areas may be subject to fluctuating temperatures, including hot and cold conditions, dependent on the season.
• Loud noise from machinery and equipment operation.
• Presence of dust, debris, and airborne particles typical of an industrial setting.
• Adherence to strict safety protocols to mitigate risks associated with the manufacturing process.

Supervision and Attendance

Supervision and/or co-worker assistance are readily available. Attendance is monitored, as unscheduled absences may jeopardize meeting customer requirements due to insufficient staffing.

Consequences of Non-Performance

• Failure to follow established safety rules and procedures may result in loss of position or termination of employment.
• Failure to meet the requirements of the Attendance Policy will result in termination of employment.
• Failure to observe safety procedures in material handling may result in serious injury, fatality, and/or damage and loss of material or property.
• Failure to move material in a timely manner may result in production delays or customer delivery delays, potentially leading to loss of business.
• Failure to complete appropriate paperwork may result in inventory shortage through loss of material or improper billing of the customer.
• Improper storage of material may result in damage or loss of material.
