Crane Operator

Compensation: $20.00 - $22.00 per hour

About the role

The Crane Operator reports to the Terminal Operations Manager or the Shredder Operations Manager. This position operates under flexible parameters with the primary goal of achieving excellence in all facets of the role, ensuring the highest quality product is delivered safely, effectively, and efficiently to decrease accidents, errors, and increase profits.

This position is regularly exposed to all weather conditions, physical hazards such as noise, fumes, and dirt due to equipment, machinery, and scrap in the yard. Safety shoes, hearing protection, respirators, and face shields must be worn to mitigate risks. Travel is not required.

Handling multiple safety and maintenance issues may increase pressure. Workload can be unpredictable, with substantial pressure during peak times. Critical deadlines require adaptability, and disturbances in workflow or irregularities in the schedule are expected. Extra hours may be required, including weekends, weekdays, and holidays.

Responsibilities

• Operate hydraulic and/or cable equipment to lift and move materials, machines, and/or products in multiple directions while complying with company Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.
• Move levers, depress foot pedals, or turn dials to operate cranes or other equipment for lifting, moving, or placing loads.
• Determine load weights and check them against lifting capacities to prevent overload.
• Load or unload bundles from trucks or move material to or from containers using moving equipment.
• Take actions to avoid potential hazards or obstructions, such as other equipment, workers, or moving objects.
• Align machine with reference stakes, guidelines, or ground positioning following hand or audio signals from other workers.
• Coordinate machine actions with other activities, such as positioning or moving loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members.
• Inspect crane mechanisms or lifting accessories and report deficiencies or malfunctions to the proper supervisor.
• Perform basic sorting of scrap, metal, and debris in preparation for processing.
• Support the Company’s Internal Control process by understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls, as well as suggesting modifications to policies, procedures, and controls.
• Communicate upward any problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, policy violations, or illegal actions.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED Certification required.
• Related training or experience operating different types of cranes preferred.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive an automobile.

Physical Activities

To perform essential functions, the ability to:

• Sit in the seat of a crane continually, up to 60 feet off ground level.
• Stand rarely, except when walking to and from the worksite.
• Lift and carry up to 50 pounds rarely.
• Crouch or bend at the knees occasionally to inspect the crane.
• Stoop or bend at the waist occasionally to increase visibility.
• Reach at arm’s length and overhead frequently when operating crane levers.
• Twist and turn at the neck and trunk continually.
• Climb occasionally when entering the crane cab.
• Walk frequently on uneven ground.
• Handle and grasp levers and dials continually.
• Use continuous leg and foot motion when using pedals.
• Communicate by speech and hearing continually.

Visual acuity is required for constant observation and scrap inspection. Mental dexterity is needed to work independently while demonstrating attention to detail and continuous awareness.
