About the role
This position supports field operations at marine project locations, focusing on the operation of cranes and other hoisting equipment for the construction or repair of marine terminals and dock facilities. The incumbent will collaborate closely with the Project Superintendent, Barge Foreman, Welders, Boat Captain, Laborers, and other skilled or semi-skilled crafts persons, upholding Orion’s core values of Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork, all grounded in Integrity.
Responsibilities
- Work as assigned by the Barge Foreman to ensure successful completion of marine construction projects.
- Assist in unloading and assembling cranes or other hoisting equipment for marine construction activities.
- Operate as a hook operator, managing swinging rigs, crane booms, and load lines.
- Operate hydraulic rubber tire or track cranes equipped with multiple-part pick-up or single-line hoists.
- Maneuver and position loads safely over designated areas.
- Use hand levers and pedals to rotate the crane chassis over lift load points.
- Utilize load charts to determine crane load and radius capabilities.
- Assist in installing boom and hoisting cables on equipment.
- Perform maintenance duties such as cleaning, greasing, oiling, and fueling assigned equipment.
- Conduct daily safety inspections of cranes, identifying issues like worn cables, bands, or broken gears.
- Secure crane booms on work barges before relocation and demonstrate safe work practices.
- Collaborate with Barge Foreman, Welders, Helpers, Laborers, and other crafts persons to complete projects safely and efficiently.
- Participate in Safety and Environmental initiatives to ensure compliance with State/Federal regulations and improve Company programs.

Requirements
- A minimum of two (2) years of crane operations experience on land and barges, or equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Certification by an ANSI-accredited agency.
- Understanding of basic functions and operations of pile hammers (diesel, air, hydraulic, and drop hammers).
- Ability to read, understand, and use crane load charts.
- General knowledge of construction rigging, including slings, cable chokers, spreader bars, and multi-part load blocks.
- Capability to pass a crane operations certification test.
Physical/Mental Requirements
- Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Capability to wear and properly utilize PPE, including hard hats, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, and steel-toed shoes.
- Ability to identify critical issues and formulate action plans with all levels of management.
- Remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as directed.
- Capable of evacuating work areas quickly in emergencies.
- Ability to walk, step, climb, or move between job site locations, including accessing work barges, boats, vessels, or docks of varying heights.
- Visual acuity (with or without corrective lenses) for crane operations.
- Ability to stand, stoop, kneel, squat, climb, or sit for extended periods.
- Perform repetitive movements involving feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands, and back.
- Climb vertical ladders up to 40'-50' in height.
- Work in confined spaces and at elevated heights.
- Lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
- Adapt to extreme temperature changes and prolonged outdoor exposure.
