About the role

The Head Girls Basketball Coach shall be responsible for establishing and maintaining effective leadership for the girls' basketball program to enable success for all. This includes working toward success for all, being an active listener, promoting a caring, supportive, healthy, and safe learning and athletic environment, valuing staff and student input, maintaining high performance standards, knowing effective athletic and instructional practices, working collaboratively to solve problems, and encouraging effective communication in the school and its communities.

Responsibilities

• Oversee all aspects of the girls' basketball program, including varsity and sub-varsity levels.
• Lead the team, assess player skills, assign team positions, develop a regular practice schedule, and organize practice times.
• Communicate with parents about concerns regarding student athletes' performance and playing time.
• Schedule facilities for practices and competitions, assign duties to assistant coaches, and coach and instruct players.
• Determine game strategy based on team capabilities, monitor academic performance, and maintain eligibility forms.
• Maintain a safe environment, model sport-like behavior, and promote the sport through communication with the media and other organizations.
• Follow state, regional, and district regulations governing the athletic program and maintain student confidentiality.

Requirements

• At least 6 months prior experience as a Coach at the High School/Middle School level, or any combination of experience working with youth or knowledge that provides the ability to perform the responsibilities of this position.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Complete a school district approved Coaching Principles training that requires a minimum of five (5) hours of instruction or complete the NFHS Coaches Fundamentals Course or attend all sessions of the WIAA Coaches School.
• Annualy complete the WIAA general rules clinic and the WIAA approved rule clinic for the sport being coached prior to the end of the third week of the sports season.
• Possess a valid current First Aid Certification (or willing to obtain) or have completed a School District approved Athletic Training/Sports Medicine course equivalent to the Red Cross First Aid Card training or be enrolled in a First Aid Class.
• Possess a valid current CPR Certification or be enrolled in and approved CPR C, which must be renewed every three years.
• Have successfully completed Concussion recognition and management with Return to Play protocols and Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness trainings as required by Washington State Law that must be renewed every three (3) years.
• Previous positive-coaching experience in basketball at the Middle or High School level.
• No history of child abuse or neglect, drug or alcohol abuse.
• Ability to complete a background check according to Yakama Nation Tribal School requirements.

Qualifications

• Knowledge and some experience as a coach or assistant coach at the high school level or college level.
• Knowledge of basketball sport, including offensive and defensive systems, fundamental basketball skills, and game strategy.
• Knowledge of safety regulations, rules, and policies that govern the basketball sport, including NFHS Basketball rules and WIAA regulations.
• Knowledge of equipment needed and used in the sport and how to maintain it, as well as managing program logistics.
• Knowledge of physical fitness, conditioning, training requirements, injury prevention, and a proper and safe diet regime to be used by young athletes.
