About the role

The Head Wrestling Coach is responsible for leading, organizing, and developing the Yakama Nation Tribal School wrestling program. This includes fostering sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, and respect while promoting academic achievement and personal growth. The coach will oversee all aspects of the wrestling program from middle school through high school as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and supervise all wrestling practices, meets, and conditioning sessions.
  • Teach fundamental and advanced wrestling techniques in a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Develop individual and team strategies to promote competitive success.
  • Ensure all student-athletes meet academic, behavioral, and eligibility standards.
  • Maintain proper safety standards, including equipment checks and injury prevention protocols.
  • Communicate effectively with athletes, parents, staff, and administration.
  • Cook with the Athletic Director regarding scheduling, uniforms, travel, and equipment needs.
  • Mentor assistant coaches and student-athletes, fostering leadership and accountability.
  • Represent Yakama Nation Tribal School with professionalism and integrity.
  • Promote cultural values, respect, and positive representation of the Yakama Nation community.

Requirements

  • At least 6 months prior experience as a Coach at the High School/Middle School level, or any combination of experience working with youth or knowledge that provides the ability to perform the responsibilities of this position.
  • Complete a school district approved Coaching Principles training that requires a minimum of five (5) hours of instruction or complete the NFHS Coaches Fundamentals Course or attend all sessions of the WIAA Coaches School.
  • Annualy complete the WIAA general rules clinic and the WIAA approved rule clinic for the sport being coached prior to the end of the third week of the sports season.
  • Possess a valid current First Aid Certification (or willing to obtain) or have completed a School District approved Athletic Training/Sports Medicine course equivalent to the Red Cross First Aid Card training or be enrolled in a First Aid Class.
  • Possess a valid current CPR Certification or be enrolled in and approved CPR C, it must be renewed every three years.
  • Have successfully completed Concussion recognition and management with Return to Play protocols and Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness trainings as required by Washington State Law that must be renewed every three (3) years.
  • No history of child abuse or neglect.
  • No history of drug or alcohol abuse.
  • Able to complete a background check according to Yakama Nation Tribal School requirements.
  • Able to pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Able to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.
  • May be required to complete the Defensive Driving Course (to be updated every 2 years).

Qualifications

  • Knowledge and some experience as a coach or assistant coach at the high school level or college level.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective coaching techniques and skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate thorough knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport.
  • Ability to maintain discipline and a positive learning atmosphere.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students.

Skills

  • Knowledge of physical fitness and training requirements as well as proper and safe diet regime to be used by young athletes.
  • Ability to assume responsibility in an educational environment to work with students, families and colleagues.
  • Ability to prepare curriculum and training schedules for the sport activity.
  • Coach will connect with parents for concerns regarding student performance.
  • Work with the Athletic Director in scheduling facilities.
  • Assign duties to the assistant coach as necessary.
  • Coach and instruct players, individually or in groups, regarding the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
  • Observe team during participation to determine the needs for improvements.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior and provide proper supervision of the athletes at all times.
  • Monitor the academic performance of the team members to ensure that eligibility requirements are met.
  • Follow state, regional and district regulations governing the athletic program.
  • Model sport-like behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
  • Acts as a team representative and promotes the sport by communicating with the new media, booster clubs, service clubs and other organizations.
  • Follow established procedures for the proper care, maintenance and requisitioning of equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
  • Work with the Athletic Director to develop a policy for awards and submit a list of award winners at the end of the season.
  • Maintain eligibility forms, emergency data cards, insurance records, equipment inventory and other related records.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
