Court Reporter (Grade 14)

This position is advertised from the minimum to the mid-point hourly rate. Salary will be determined based on education and experience at the time of offer.

About the role

Makes verbatim stenotype record of legal proceedings for the Superior Court, and produces accurate and timely transcripts in the format required by the court. Develops, prepares, and presents the official verbatim record of hearings, trials, and other court proceedings as official court transcripts.

Responsibilities

• Attends court sessions to record the spoken words of participants using a stenograph machine or other dictation equipment, ensuring a verbatim record of testimony, colloquy, and discussions.
• Works in the courtroom, chambers, or on-site as required, providing real-time reporting services when needed.
• Records testimony at a pace sufficient to allow uninterrupted progress and reads back testimony upon request by the judge or attorneys.
• Provides clerical/typing support to judges, including typing orders, memos, and correspondence.
• Maintains a working knowledge of courtroom practices and procedures to ensure efficient court proceedings.
• Coordinates the flow of paperwork, including periodic and special reports.
• Uses Computer Aided Transcription (CAT) software for editing and correction of transcripts, updating the computer dictionary with new terminology as needed.
• Provides real-time transcription services as directed.
• Develops and updates transcription indices, court indices, concordances, and other ancillary products.
• Transcribes, proofreads, and certifies official court transcripts of verbatim testimony and discussions in the prescribed format.
• Maintains an up-to-date index and record of transcripts pending, in process, and delivered.
• Organizes and maintains records, filing materials alphabetically, numerically, chronologically, or by other predetermined categories.
• Reviews titles, documents, and printed materials for completeness and accuracy.
• Responds to sensitive requests for information and assistance.
• Stays current with trends and developments in the field by reading publications and attending seminars or conferences.
• Performs related duties as required or assigned.
