COURT REPORTER
About the role
The Clark County Justice Court - Las Vegas is seeking qualified candidates for the Court Reporter position. Court Reporters provide accurate verbatim reporting of court hearings, proceedings and actions; transcribe verbatim court proceedings into printed form and associated notes covering civil and criminal matters. They provide real-time reporting services to judicial officers, prepare transcripts according to Government Codes, Rules of Court, and Statutes, and provide read‑back upon request. This recruitment is limited to the first 250 applications received and will close without notice once that number is reached. The examination will create an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies within the next six months; HR may call only the most qualified applicants. Some positions may be confidential or non‑union and excluded from union membership. Employment is contingent upon successful background investigation, periodic reinvestigations, pre‑employment drug testing, and proof of legal authorization to work in the United States (no H1B sponsorship).
Responsibilities
- Report verbatim all court proceedings using stenographic or voice‑writing equipment and Computer‑Aided Transcription (CAT) software; request clarification when needed for accuracy.
- Set up and operate audio/video equipment to record official court activities; repeat sections of recordings for judge or jury as requested.
- Maintain automated or hand‑prepared logs of proceedings; correlate logged information with recorded data and note witness/participant behavior, session times, etc.
- Transcribe court proceedings to printed format using word processing and transcription apparatus.
- Ensure motions, decisions, and all actions are accurately documented.
- Obtain proper authorization for transcription requests.
- Proofread transcribed materials for accuracy.
- Maintain records of work performed.
- Be prepared to change assignments on short notice or work temporary assignments in other court departments.
Requirements
- Education and Experience: Equivalent to an Associate’s degree from an accredited institution AND two (2) years of full‑time experience preparing verbatim transcriptions from recording devices OR four (4) years of recording court proceedings and transcribing such proceedings in real time in a court setting.
- College‑level course work in paralegal studies, secretarial, or office administrative subjects is desired.
- May be required to provide own recording/transcribing equipment.
- Experience providing Real‑time Reporting and Computer Aided Transcription (CAT) capability is preferred.
- Must possess a valid Nevada Class C Driver License or ability to use alternative transportation when needed.
- Must possess a valid Certified Court Reporter Certification issued by the Nevada State Board of Certified Court Reporters (per NRS 656.145).
- Employment contingent upon successful background investigation (periodic reinvestigations may occur).
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States; Clark County does not provide H1B visa sponsorships.
- Employment contingent upon results of a pre‑employment drug examination.
