About the role

The Hearing Reporter provides assistance and support to Workers’ Compensation Judges and the Department of Industrial Relations in adjudication and administrative matters. Key responsibilities include taking verbatim accounts of conferences, hearings, trials, and other formal meetings in machine shorthand, taking and transcribing dictated summaries of hearings, preparing verbatim transcripts and other legal or administrative documents, entering statistical data, copying and scanning documents, and performing incidental clerical and stenographic work.

Responsibilities

  • Takes verbatim accounts of conferences, hearings, trials, and other formal meetings in machine shorthand.
  • Takes and transcribes dictated summaries of hearings.
  • Prepares verbatim transcripts and other legal or administrative documents using computer-aided transcription and word-processing software.
  • Enters statistical data in data management programs.
  • Copies and scans documents using various office equipment.
  • Performs incidental related clerical and stenographic work.

Requirements

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

Experience: One year of experience taking and transcribing verbatim accounts of conferences, hearings, proceedings, trials, and other formal meetings in shorthand or machine shorthand writing; or Possession of a State of California License as a Certified Shorthand Reporter; or Possession of a Certificate of Proficiency or a Certificate of Merit issued by the National Shorthand Reporters’ Association (NSRA).

Qualifications

One year of experience taking and transcribing verbatim accounts of conferences, hearings, proceedings, trials, and other formal meetings in shorthand or machine shorthand writing; or Possession of a State of California License as a Certified Shorthand Reporter; or Possession of a Certificate of Proficiency or a Certificate of Merit issued by the National Shorthand Reporters’ Association (NSRA).

Skills

Knowledge of machine shorthand and computer-aided transcription software.
