Court Interpreter - Spanish - Operations Division
Positions will be filled at one of the following levels based on candidate's qualifications and available positions.
About the Role
The Essex Vicinage is seeking a detail-oriented professional to work as a Court Interpreter. Under the general direction of the Operations Division Manager and other supervisory personnel, the successful candidate must be able to interpret in three modes of interpretation (sight, consecutive, and simultaneous), in court and virtual proceedings, quasi-judicial hearings, complementary dispute resolution events, weddings, and other court-related events in person or via a telecommunication device.
The qualified candidate will produce translations, either in draft or final form, of documents such as official forms, public signs, notices, posters, letters, and correspondence. Other responsibilities include collecting and entering data into automated recordkeeping systems and participating in study and training activities to develop and maintain interpreting and translating skills.

Responsibilities
- Provide in-person, telephonic, or video interpreting services for court proceedings, quasi-judicial hearings, complementary dispute resolution events, court support services, and other court-related events.
- Interpret from spoken English into a foreign language, and reverse, in sight, consecutive, or simultaneous mode for clients or customers.
- For virtual events, assist with setting up and testing devices for court staff and litigants to provide simultaneous interpreting.
- Deliver interpreting services individually or as a member of a team of two or more interpreters.
- Produce final or draft translations into English or another language of documents such as official forms, public signs, notices, posters, form letters, and correspondence.
- Provide cross-training to co-workers and shadowing opportunities for interns.
- Recommend improvements in operating procedures, programs, standards, work processes, or administrative practices.
Qualifications
Eligible applicants are court interpreters approved by the New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC). AOC-approved interpreters include:
- Interpreters who have passed the written and performance oral exams of the National Center for State Courts administered by the AOC or an equivalent test administered by a member state of the Council of Language Access Coordinators.
- Interpreters who possess the Court Interpreter Certification from the Administrative Office of the United States Courts.
Note: Prior to translating documents, incumbents MUST pass the translation test administered by the AOC.
Pay
- Court Interpreter 1 - Conditionally Approved/Trainee (Level 1):
- Minimum Salary: $63,353.90
- Maximum Salary A: $105,725.80
- Maximum Salary B: $100,439.52
- Court Interpreter 1 - Journey (Level 2a-Journey):
- Minimum Salary: $74,454.81
- Maximum Salary A: $105,725.80
- Maximum Salary B: $100,439.52
- Court Interpreter 2 - Master (Level 3-Mastery):
- Minimum Salary: $78,922.07
- Maximum Salary A: $119,127.65
- Maximum Salary B: $113,171.27
For newly hired individuals, the starting salary will normally be at the minimum of the salary range. For current Judiciary employees, salary upon promotion or advancement will be an increase of 5% of base salary, not to exceed the maximum of the range, or the minimum salary of the band/level, whichever is greater.
Judiciary employees hired prior to June 3, 2014, are considered Schedule A. Newly hired individuals and Judiciary employees hired on or after June 3, 2014, are considered Schedule B.
Schedule
The Judiciary currently offers a hybrid work schedule, and this position may qualify for up to two (2) days of remote work outside of Judiciary buildings. To participate in this program, in addition to installing a multifactor authentication app on your phone or tablet, you will be required to have high-speed home internet access.
Supplemental Information
- Physical Ability: For some positions, applicants must have the ability to perform work which requires climbing and prolonged standing, stretching, bending, and reaching. The selected candidate must be able to frequently lift and carry supplies weighing from 30 to 50 pounds and, occasionally, materials weighing up to 75 pounds.
- Driver's License: Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
- Authorization to Work: US citizenship is not required. Selected candidate must be authorized to work in the US according to Department of Homeland Security, US Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations.
- Background Check: Newly hired employees must agree to a thorough background check that will include fingerprinting.
- Residency Law: In accordance with N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), the "New Jersey First Act," all persons newly hired by the Judiciary within one year must establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey. Exemptions may be requested on the basis of hardship or employer critical need.
