Court Interpreter - SPANISH
Full-time, exempt position with a salary range of $62,879.52 - $91,175.76. Salary offers align with the Colorado Judicial Department’s compensation step plan and are based on relevant experience, available budget, and compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.
About the role
Provides language services to assist Limited English Proficiency (LEP) clients in accessing court services during court, probation, and ancillary proceedings, virtually, telephonically, and/or in person. Interprets or arranges for interpreting services by independent contractors. Seeking interpreters fluent in Spanish.
This position is based at the Boulder County Justice Center (1777 6th St. in Boulder) but may require coverage at the Longmont Courthouse (1035 Kimbark St. in Longmont) and Boulder County Jail (3200 Airport Rd. in Boulder) as needed.
Responsibilities
- Provides accurate, complete, and clear interpretation in all types of hearings where a party to the case has limited English proficiency and requires a Spanish interpreter.
- Schedules interpreters for languages other than Spanish, including American Sign Language interpreters and real-time captioning providers, for court appearances, competency evaluations, pre-sentence reports, mediations, and court visitations.
- Authorizes invoices for independent contractors and assists with printing, organizing, and sending the docket to them.
- Receives and processes requests to translate documents for specific programs in the district, coordinating with the Translation Department of the Office of Language Access.
- Translates short documents such as letters from defendants to judges, victim’s statements, and informational flyers.
- Attends meetings and training as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned, including potential oversight of another employee’s work quality, training, and assignments.
Requirements
- Associate’s degree or 2 years of college or equivalent relevant work experience substituted on a year-for-year basis.
- 1 to 3 years of experience interpreting in a judicial environment.
- State or Federal Court Interpreter Certification or equivalent.
Skills
- Comprehensive, practical knowledge of work processes, capable of completing a broad range of tasks, sometimes complex, without frequent reference to others.
- Ability to handle stressful, negative, or aggressive interactions with the public requiring high levels of tact.
- Proficiency in Spanish and ability to arrange interpreting services for other languages, including American Sign Language.
Schedule
In-person, Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., excluding federal holidays, with a one-hour lunch break.
