About the role

The Court Documents Clerk I position involves receiving and reviewing papers and documents for entry as court records, checking for compliance with relevant statutes and rules, docketing cases and documents, providing information and assistance to attorneys regarding filing procedures and forms, setting hearing dates through statutory publication, and performing other duties as required.

Responsibilities

  • Receives and reviews papers and documents for entry as court records.
  • Checks papers and documents for compliance with pertinent statutes and rules and regulations governing the filing of legal documents.
  • Dockets cases and documents according to appropriate case categories.
  • Renders information and assistance to practicing attorneys in matters pertaining to filing procedures and use of forms.
  • Sets hearing dates by statutory publication.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Education Requirement: Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • General Experience: Two (2) years of progressively responsible general clerical work experience, demonstrating the ability to read, understand, and apply written directions.
  • Specialized Experience: Two (2) years of responsible work experience in the preparation and/or processing of legal papers and documents used in court proceedings, including knowledge of the nature and purpose of legal papers and documents being handled, and determining whether all required information is present in acceptable form.

Qualifications

  • Substitutions allowed for General Experience: One year of education above high school may substitute for one year of General Experience; two years of education may substitute for two years of General Experience.
  • Substitutions allowed for Specialized Experience: One year of education above high school may substitute for one year of Specialized Experience; two years of education may substitute for two years of Specialized Experience; a legal stenographer or legal secretary curriculum may substitute for one year of Specialized Experience; a para-legal, legal studies, or law program may substitute for Specialized Experience on a year-for-year basis, up to a maximum of two years; a Juris Doctor degree may substitute for three years of Specialized Experience.
