About the Role

Provides timely delivery of prescriptions in an accurate, courteous manner to WVU Medicine patients and staff, adhering to prescribed transportation criteria and Pharmacy policies. Delivers reports and supplies to clients while following all hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Works as part of the delivery team to ensure items are complete, packed correctly, and delivered safely to the correct patient. Performs technical functions in support of Outpatient Retail & Specialty Pharmacy operations under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.

Responsibilities

• Ensures compliance with federal and state regulations to limit drug diversion, including collecting prescription hard copies and reviewing government-issued photo IDs.
• Assists and delivers packaged pharmaceuticals, supplies, and equipment in a timely, safe, and accountable manner.
• Cooperates with other pharmacy staff members when planning and organizing daily delivery services.
• Collects patient information, including verification of the person delivered to, signature, and collection of payment information.
• Maintains patient privacy at all times according to HIPAA and ensures the security of Protected Health Information and medications that are couriered.
• Collaborates with pharmacy staff to collect appropriate prescription and patient information prior to dispensing medication.
• Ensures the patient’s prescription order is complete prior to delivery.
• Ensures proper handling and storage of all medications (e.g., refrigeration).
• Meets expectations for customer satisfaction and anticipates customer needs.
• Follows up with the Director or Manager on issues requiring immediate attention (e.g., inclement weather, company vehicle issues).
• Handles customer complaints in a fair and empathetic manner.
• Restocks delivery and shipping supplies in the AHS warehouse and notifies purchasing personnel when supplies are needed.
• Performs routine cleaning of the vehicle and transport carriers on a daily basis.
• Relays offers for counseling and additional information to the patient/patient representative and documents acceptance or declination.
• Maintains records for items delivered and mailed from the pharmacy, including prescriptions, supplies, and non-prescription medications.
• Maintains logs for medication owed to patients to track correct disposition.
• Ensures that non-employees do not have access to the company vehicle or undelivered medications (exception for vehicle maintenance staff).
• Weekend call may be required as needed.

Restricted Duties: The following duties may only be performed by pharmacists, interns, or technicians and cannot be assigned to the Courier:

• Receiving oral prescriptions from prescribers or their authorized designees.
• Consulting with prescribers or their designees about patients’ prescriptions.
• Providing confidential patient information to other health professionals or insurance companies.
• Checking medications before dispensing them to patients.
• Consulting with patients about prescribed medication use and other health issues.
• Directly handling, counting, and labeling medications (Couriers may only do so if accompanied by a pharmacist).
• Entering the pharmacy proper unless accompanied by a pharmacist.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
• Valid Driver’s License (preferred).

• Ability to stand and walk short distances for eight or more hours.
• Frequent bending, stooping, or stretching.
• Ability to lift 30 pounds and push 50 pounds.

The work environment involves performing essential functions that may require working under stressful conditions and adapting to a rapid pace of events.
