Counselor II

About the Role

The Counselor II at Hampstead Hospital establishes therapeutic relationships with assigned residents and facilitates maintaining the therapeutic environment in the Residential program. This role provides progressively basic-to-complex patient care services, increasing independence with experience and skill.

Creates and implements therapeutic plans and relationships with assigned residents to ensure treatment plans are followed, helping residents progress toward their goals. Provides resident-centered care that is resiliency- and recovery-oriented, with a primary focus on patients' health and safety.

Responsibilities

• Conduct patient group sessions, psychoeducation, and recreation groups under the supervision of a clinician or program director.
• Provide opportunities for residents to attend and participate in community activities and outdoor recreation.
• Support residents in developing independent living skills to help them succeed in the community.
• Assist residents with daily living and maintain a safe, therapeutic milieu along with an orderly work environment.
• Participate in hospital safety training programs and meet with the Program Director for ongoing mentoring, guidance, and supervision.
• Utilize interventions consistent with current research relevant to developmental, cultural, and disability-specific needs.
• Maintain current knowledge in psychiatric care to apply a broad range of established therapeutic techniques; work becomes more complex and independent with increased knowledge, training, and experience.
• Consult and communicate with other professional treatment staff regarding treatment interventions, psychosocial and environmental influences, community resources, and transition needs.
• Update and maintain accurate medical records and documentation in accordance with Joint Commission, State Licensing, and Medicare standards.
• Follow program and departmental policies, procedures, and discipline-specific standards for psychosocial assessments, progress notes, treatment plans, and required forms.
• Promote a hospital culture of patient safety in a non-punitive atmosphere; observe and report significant events or concerns to the Program Director.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university with a major in social work, psychology, counseling, or a related behavioral science field.
• Each additional year of approved formal education may substitute for one year of required work experience.
• Three years' experience in social work, clinical mental health counseling, or a related field in a psychiatric inpatient or clinical environment.
• Each additional year of approved work experience may substitute for one year of required formal education.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Valid Driver’s License.
