About the role
The primary focus of the school counselor is to assist students whose emotional/social problems interfere with their ability to obtain maximum benefit from the educational program. The counselor may also act as a liaison between parents/guardians, school, and public/private agencies responsible for student care and services.
Responsibilities
- Implement a school counseling program aligned with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National model in the areas of academic, college and career, and social-emotional development.
- Counsel students individually and in small groups.
- Conduct counseling evaluations with students suspected of having emotional/behavior problems.
- Develop treatment plans to guide students toward reaching goals and monitoring progress, and making treatment adjustments when necessary.
- Refer students to outside resources as needed.
- Maintain appropriate confidential records for students.
- Provide feedback and consultation to parents/guardians and staff regarding student counseling activities.
- Adhere to state and District mandated reporting requirements as they pertain to safety concerns.
- Provide school counseling core curriculum lessons, parent/family education programs, assist families with school-related problems and issues, and make information available to families.
- Provide training for staff on Conflict Prevention and Intervention or other strategies, and assist school staff in effectively addressing problem areas.
- Demonstrate the use of evidence-informed practices in their interventions.
- Attend at least quarterly meetings with the School Safety Assessment and Prevention Team (SSAPT) to review multiple sources of data and discuss/review goals.
- Consult and collaborate with other school professionals such as school psychologists, school social workers, and school nurses, in addition to community agencies.
- Demonstrate a commitment to the values and ethics of the individual's professional code of ethics.
- Attend required program training and conduct required program activities, including implementation of social emotional learning strategies.
Requirements
- Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work or Psychology required
- ADE School Counselor Certification required (must apply prior to contract start date)
- 1-3 years school social work experience or the equivalent, providing the skills and knowledge necessary to plan and implement meaningful and effective guidance and social work activities.
- Excellent skills in project planning and in coordinating multiple short- and long-term projects.

Physical Requirements
- Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.
