About the role
SouthWest Metro District #288 is seeking a passionate, industry-current Cosmetology Instructor to join our Board-certified program. This role is designed for a professional who can bridge the gap between high school and the professional salon industry. You will provide high-quality instruction in hair, skin, and nail care, ensuring students meet the rigorous standards required for MN Board of Cosmetology licensure while fostering a supportive environment for a diverse student population.
Responsibilities
- Deliver and manage a comprehensive curriculum (hair, barbering, nails, and esthetics) that satisfies all MN Board of Cosmetology credit hour and competency requirements.
- Oversee the student salon environment, ensuring all health, safety, and sanitation protocols are strictly followed in accordance with state laws.
- Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet the varying needs, interests, and abilities of high school learners, including those with unique learning plans.
- Model and teach "soft skills" essential to the industry, including client consultation, salon business ethics, and professional communication.
- Maintain meticulous records of student hours, practical applications, and academic progress to ensure eligibility for state testing.
- Work alongside SW Metro staff, parents, and member districts to support the holistic development of every student.
Requirements
- Current Cosmetology Instructor License from the MN Board of Cosmetology (or in the process of obtaining).
- Must hold (or be eligible to obtain) a CTE Cosmetology (9-12) license.
- MN Board of Cosmetology Salon or School Manager license is preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of employment in the cosmetology field.
- Education: Associate's degree (preferred) OR High School Diploma/GED with relevant industry experience as outlined by PELSB requirements.
- Previous experience in a CTE or secondary school setting is preferred, but we encourage experienced stylists with a heart for teaching to apply.
- Proficiency in differentiated instruction to reach learners of all abilities and cultural backgrounds.
- Stay current with modern trends, chemical safety, and salon technology/software.
- Strong interpersonal skills for collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team and engaging with the local salon community.
- Strong classroom management skills.
- Ability to build successful relationships with students and staff.
- Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate with teams.
Pay & Benefits
The pay range is $56,000-103,000 based on education and experience.

Physical Requirements
- Active Environment: Requires frequent standing, walking, and manual dexterity for technical demonstrations.
- Exertion: Ability to lift/move up to 20 pounds occasionally.
- Environment: Must be comfortable working in a salon setting with exposure to standard hair/nail chemicals and moderate noise levels.
