COSMETOLOGY (ESTHETICS): Adjunct / Substitute Instructor POOL (college credit)
Adjunct (part-time/substitute) instructor positions for the Cosmetology (Esthetics) pool at the San Diego Community College District. Applications are accepted continuously; hiring occurs when openings arise for fall, spring, or summer semesters. Assignments may include day, evening, weekend, and/or off-campus classes across City, Mesa, Miramar campuses and continuing education centers.
About the role
Primary duties are related to curriculum and teaching, divided between lecture and lab classes as determined by the department. Adjunct faculty must be available to students outside of class and maintain a professional, inclusive learning environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide instruction in accordance with established curriculum and course outlines.
- Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
- Stay current in subject matter areas.
- Fulfill professional responsibilities of a part-time/temporary faculty member.
- Teach all scheduled classes.
- Maintain accurate student records.
- Create and maintain an environment that emphasizes teaching, learning, and free discussion of ideas.

Requirements
- Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity, and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.
- Degrees must be from regionally accredited institutions.
- License in Cosmetology OR Esthetics (desired).
- California Community College Instructor Credential in Cosmetology & Barbering (valid for life), if possessed.
Qualifications
- Any Bachelor’s degree AND two (2) years of professional experience directly related to the area of assignment; OR
- Any Associate degree AND six (6) years of professional experience directly related to the area of assignment; OR
- The equivalent.
Applicants with foreign degrees must have coursework evaluated by a NACES or ACEI member association; a copy of the evaluation must be submitted with the application.
Pay
Salary placement follows the Adjunct College Salary Schedules. Initial placement is at the first class/step until official transcripts are received. Instructors with advanced coursework are placed on the appropriate class and step effective the first month after official transcripts are submitted.
Conditions of Employment
- Submit official college transcripts.
- Provide a Certificate of Tuberculosis Exam (renewed every 4 years).
- Complete fingerprinting via Live Scan at the district’s expense (clearance required before first day).
- Present original documents for proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
Note: Employees may be transferred to any site at the option of the Chancellor.
