Corrosion Technician

About the role

This position applies corrosion knowledge and skills to repair, install, troubleshoot, analyze, and perform other predictive and preventative maintenance tasks on assigned equipment, facilities, systems, and associated devices within gas and liquid facilities and pipelines.

Responsibilities

• Design, install, operate, inspect, and maintain cathodic protection systems within an assigned segment of the pipeline system, compressor stations, or plant facilities in compliance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain working knowledge of regulatory requirements (OSHA, DOT, EPA, etc.), perform associated tasks, and complete required documentation.
• Investigate and analyze corrosive conditions for existing and/or proposed facilities.
• Ensure corrosion control and compliance of cathodically protected pipelines, compressor stations, plant facilities, and other buried, submerged, or above-ground facilities.
• Conduct pipe-to-soil potential surveys, casing-to-soil readings, rectifier and bond readings, current flows on pipelines, and foreign pipe-to-soil readings for all structures under cathodic protection as required by SOPs or regulations; document findings in the corrosion database or other records.
• Evaluate protective coating conditions (internal, external, and atmospheric systems), make repairs as needed, assess pipe anomalies, and perform remaining strength calculations per established procedures.
• Understand pipeline internal corrosion mechanisms and related mitigation measures, including treatment/testing, sample collection, bacteria/pH/dissolved H₂S/CO₂ testing and analysis, and chemical requirement calculations.
• Perform cathodic protection design, including current requirement calculations and soil resistivity testing.
• Generate and maintain reports covering rectifiers, bonds, pipeline isolation, and annual corrosion control reports.
• Install, maintain, and repair rectifiers, anode systems, cables, bonds, test stations, and perform ground bed efficiency calculations.
• Evaluate and mitigate effects of stray currents from external sources (e.g., traction systems, coal mines, AC transmission lines).
• Read and interpret pipeline maps, as-builts, and PLDs.
• Use and operate safety equipment (arc flash PPE, respirators, hard hats, safety glasses, etc.) in potentially hazardous areas.
• Maintain workmanship consistent with company SOPs, industry standards, and applicable codes/engineering drawings.
• Ensure facilities, grounds, and work areas are maintained in a safe, orderly, and functional manner.
• Communicate with other technicians to coordinate repairs when applicable.
• Train others in discipline-specific tasks and evaluate their knowledge, skills, and abilities for the company’s skill qualification program (dependent on position level).
• Actively participate in PHMSA or State regulatory audits and company safety programs/initatives.
• Inspect crew welds (full wrap and pumpkins) for acetylene welds and surface pitting during corrosion activities such as pipeline recoats and exposure repair.
• Comply with company safety policies and procedures, including energy isolation lockout/tagout (LOTO).

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Relevant industry experience:
  • Level C: 0–2 years
  • Level B: 2–4 years
  • Level A: 4+ years
• Valid driver’s license in state of residency.
• Proficiency with MS Office Suite products.
• Ability to train other technicians and/or sign off on qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate of Applied Science – Corrosion Technology.
• NACE Corrosion Technician or Corrosion Technologist Certification.
• NACE CP Level II.
• Welding school qualifications for weld inspection.

Working Conditions

• Frequent exposure to heat, cold, and adverse weather conditions.
• Work may include confined spaces.
• Repetitive standing, walking, bending, stretching, reaching over shoulder height, and climbing ladders up to 25 feet.
• Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs with or without assistance.
• Subject to call-outs for operational issues and emergencies after hours, at night, and on weekends/holidays.
• Work in and around industrial/construction settings with hazardous products, processes, materials, chemicals, extreme temperatures, and loud machinery; may require appropriate personal protective equipment.
