Corrosion Control Specialist

About the role

HF Sinclair Midstream is seeking a Corrosion Specialist to plan, guide, collect, and analyze data for tasks related to the cathodic protection and corrosion control program for company-owned and operated pipelines, tanks, and facilities.

Responsibilities

• Communicates regularly with the Manager Corrosion Prevention on the status of the Corrosion Prevention Program (CP).
• Leads or assists with Corrosion Specialist Engineering projects, including cathodic protection (CP), internal corrosion (water treatment), and/or protective coatings and linings.
• Assists with contract-related activities, including design, field inspection, contract administration, scheduling, and forecasting.
• Leads projects and performs contract administration activities.
• Serves as Team Lead in the absence of the Manager Corrosion Prevention.
• Leads and coordinates teams of AMPP/NACE-trained junior CP or CIP staff in coatings inspections and/or CP field testing.
• Reviews detailed designs for corrosion prevention systems, cost estimates, and bid documents.
• Serves as Lead for Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) review.
• Assists in the evaluation of bids and the selection of contractors.
• Serves as project manager for corrosion-related capital improvement projects and supports the Region Specialist.
• Provides engineering service and support in planning, construction, operation, maintenance, and analysis of corrosion control.
• Leads development of solutions to technical problems involving unconventional or advanced problem-solving techniques.
• Collaborates with the Manager Corrosion Prevention/Engineering to prepare complex engineering plans, designs, specifications, standards, evaluations, and studies.
• Explores subject areas, defines scope, and selects problems for investigation.
• Makes authoritative decisions on technical matters, as directed by the Manager Corrosion Prevention.
• Demonstrates sound knowledge of Association of Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) best industry practices.
• Provides R&D recommendations to the Manager Corrosion Prevention and applies innovative technology to increase efficiency and lower costs.
• Conducts and assists in field tests, inspections, measurements, report filing, and record-keeping.
• Oversees installation of corrosion mitigation systems.
• Assists in coordinating maintenance of the cathodic protection/corrosion prevention system in assigned areas.
• Liaises with Pipeline Operations and Integrity Management Engineers, assisting when necessary.
• Reviews drawings and project submittals for potential interference with company-owned assets.
• Handles special assignments or tasks as determined by the manager.

Requirements

• A minimum of 10 years of on-the-job experience.
• Preferred experience: pipeline construction and/or operations, background in electrical theory, use of MCMiller GX field computer and MC Miller Proactive software.

Qualifications

• A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Level III NACE Cathodic Protection Technologist Certification and NACE Senior Corrosion Technologist Certification.
• Preferred: Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math.

Skills

• Advanced reading, writing, and mathematical calculation skills.
• Ability to plan, organize, and carry out duties with minimal supervision.
• Proficient with MS10 operating system and Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Visio).
• Ability to work and communicate effectively with all levels of co-workers and external contacts.
• Required to maintain operator qualifications related to corrosion prevention.
• Advanced understanding of DOT CFR 49 Part 195 & 192 requirements.
• Ability to maintain and operate a company-owned vehicle, including off-road environments and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs).
• Ability to lead and train other company personnel.
• May lead the work of others from time to time.

Work Conditions

• Office-based with up to 20% travel by land or air.
• Required to work in refinery/industrial environments or outdoors, subject to varying weather conditions and temperatures.
• May be exposed to loud noises, vibrations, fumes, airborne particles, dust, dirt, mud, water, petroleum products, chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, and/or extreme temperatures.
• May work near moving mechanical parts, rotating equipment, or exposed to electrical shock risk.
• May work in confined spaces or at heights up to 50 feet.
