About the role
The City of Yakima is seeking Corrections Officers to join their team. This position offers a hiring incentive of $10,000, with $5,000 paid on the first full month of employment and the remaining $5,000 after the first full year of employment.
Responsibilities
- Receives detainees, conducts body searches, and maintains physical control using minimum force.
- Obtains required information from detainees, issues uniforms, and stores valuables.
- Supervises detainee work crews, coordinates with the Building Superintendent, and inspects facility repairs.
- Assists other officers, performs court security duties, and operates electronic access doors.
- Maintains safety, prepares meals, and coordinates visitations.
- Monitors detainee activities, handles commissary transactions, and accounts for supplies.
- Operates vehicles, and contributes to administrative tasks.
Requirements
- Must be 20 years old or older.
- A U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
- Good command of English, both written and verbal.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Physical condition, good moral character, and capability to control violent offenders.
- Pass relevant courses and have two years of experience as a Correction/Detention Officer.
- Valid Washington State Driver's License.
- Ability to meet and maintain department standards for firearm qualification.

Pay
The pay range for this position is established through the City of Yakima’s Master Pay Ordinance in accordance with the Municipal Code and/or the applicable collective bargaining agreement. New employees generally start at step A with progression through the steps based on merit and successful performance evaluation.
