CORRECTIONS OFFICER (Job ID 52775)

Location: Berlin, NH – Northern New Hampshire Correctional Facility

Full-time position with a trainee option at $25.17/hour. Hazardous Duty Pay of $60 biweekly and a $10,000 sign-on bonus are offered.

About the Role

Perform work as a Corrections Officer in accordance with established rules, regulations, post orders, and specific instructions under general administrative direction. Maintain professional and personal integrity, ethics, and a positive community standing while establishing a correctional environment supportive of rehabilitative activities and access to healthcare services to reduce recidivism risks. This is an armed post position.

Responsibilities

• Maintain security in buildings, towers, and other posts of an adult correctional facility; intervene during emergencies or altercations and gain physical control of offenders.
• Supervise, escort, and/or transport the movement of offenders inside and outside the correctional facility; conduct periodic counts and searches of offenders and their living quarters for contraband.
• Supervise housing units and offenders during work, recreational, and religious activities; conduct health and safety hazard inspections.
• Perform random and specific searches of residents and visitors to prevent the introduction of contraband into the facility.
• Search housing, buildings, physical plants, supply areas, and personal property for weapons and contraband following institutional procedures and guidelines.
• Conduct interviews and obtain statements from victims, witnesses, suspects, and other involved parties during incidents.
• Prepare appropriate tracking, reports, and documentation pertaining to occurrences, actions, and incidents for use in disciplinary and mitigation proceedings.
• Discuss issues and minor adjustment problems with offenders; refer more severe concerns to superiors or proper correctional facility staff.
• Promote rehabilitation by modifying offenders' social attitudes, discouraging undesirable behaviors, and encouraging worthwhile activities using effective verbal communication skills to direct, mentor, and de-escalate encounters.
• Detain offenders, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints; subdue resisting offenders using approved non-lethal and lethal maneuvers, if necessary, within outlined scope.

Requirements

• High school diploma or high school equivalency credential.
• Six months of experience as a Corrections Officer or its equivalent in law enforcement, police work, or the military.
• Possession of a valid driver's license.
• Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
• Ability to use firearms and demonstrate proficiency by passing annual weapons qualifications.
• Must complete training at the Corrections Academy and obtain certification as a Corrections Officer during the probationary period.
• Successfully participate in a physical agility test designed to measure ability to perform essential, physically demanding job functions.
• Pass a comprehensive medical examination provided at the state's expense after a conditional offer of appointment.

Trainee Option: Candidates with an equivalent combination of a high school diploma and no previous experience may be considered and hired in trainee status for this position.

Pay

$28.37/hour - $34.74/hour. Hazardous Duty Pay of $60 biweekly is provided in addition to the base salary.
