Responsibilities

  • Maintains jail security.
  • Makes sure prisoners follow jail policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Monitors and controls prisoners during meals, sleep, recreation, and other activities.
  • Controls and restrains prisoners to keep everyone safe.
  • Reports and responds to unusual situations.
  • Makes sure visits are done safely and according to security rules.
  • Takes attendance regularly and checks living areas for anything that shouldn't be there.
  • Uses machines to control access to different areas of the jail.
  • Books prisoners in line with the rules.
  • Checks prisoners for things they shouldn't have, like weapons or drugs.
  • Issues showers, clothes, and other personal items to prisoners.
  • Manages prisoners' money and belongings.
  • Ensures prisoners get food and helps prepare it.
  • Completes daily logs and reports.
  • Fingerprints people and fills out paperwork.
  • Speaks in court when needed.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Completion of a Corrections Course through OPOTA or a qualified technical school (not required).
  • Ability to show proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of starting.
  • Licensed as a Corrections Officer from the State of Ohio (not required).
  • State driver's license.

Qualifications

An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework, and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is: high school degree, GED or equivalent.

  • Knowledge of criminal justice system and correctional procedures.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and control in emergency situations.
  • Effective communication and dealing with prisoners.
  • Sensitivity to cultural and diversity issues.
  • Handling prisoner behavior.
  • First aid and CPR.
  • Self-defense.
  • Completing records and forms.
  • Writing incident and other reports.
  • Observing prisoner behavior.
