About the role
The Portage County Sheriff’s Office is seeking qualified, motivated, and professional individuals interested in a career serving the citizens of Portage County. This position offers a 7 on / 7 off work schedule and a starting pay of $26.23 per hour (2026 rate).
Responsibilities
- Supervises inmates and maintains security of Jail and Juvenile Detention Center
- Acts as first line inmate grievance mediator
- Completes initial mental health screenings
- Assists in the transport of prisoners to and from facilities, courts, and medical/mental treatment facilities
- Dispenses medication and assists nurses with medical visits
- Provides mental and physical triage to inmates
- Maintains required data, completes necessary forms, and documents behavioral problems
- Photographs and fingerprints inmates
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License
- No felony convictions unless pardoned by the Governor
- Must be 18 years of age or older and a U.S. Citizen
- Must meet and maintain recruitment and eligibility criteria established by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board of Jailers
- Must satisfactorily complete all required training and pass a background check
- Prior corrections experience preferred
The Portage County Sheriff’s Office will provide the 200-hour Corrections Academy at MSTC for certification by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board within one year of employment.
