About the role

The Portage County Sheriff’s Office is seeking qualified, motivated, and professional individuals interested in a career serving the citizens of Portage County. This position offers a 7 on / 7 off work schedule and a starting pay of $26.23 per hour (2026 rate).

Responsibilities

• Supervises inmates and maintains security of Jail and Juvenile Detention Center
• Acts as first line inmate grievance mediator
• Completes initial mental health screenings
• Assists in the transport of prisoners to and from facilities, courts, and medical/mental treatment facilities
• Dispenses medication and assists nurses with medical visits
• Provides mental and physical triage to inmates
• Maintains required data, completes necessary forms, and documents behavioral problems
• Photographs and fingerprints inmates

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License
• No felony convictions unless pardoned by the Governor
• Must be 18 years of age or older and a U.S. Citizen
• Must meet and maintain recruitment and eligibility criteria established by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board of Jailers
• Must satisfactorily complete all required training and pass a background check
• Prior corrections experience preferred

The Portage County Sheriff’s Office will provide the 200-hour Corrections Academy at MSTC for certification by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board within one year of employment.
