Corrections Officer
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, this position maintains security within the institution and oversees the health and safety of staff and prisoners. Physically patrols and visually inspects units, yards, buildings, prisoners, prisoner property, and clothing to ensure welfare, safety, and security. Maintains visual surveillance of grounds by foot. Prevents prisoner escape. Performs inspections and searches of physical premises and cells checking for contraband and compliance with regulations. Investigates and reports unusual circumstances. Conducts, pats, and/or strip searches prisoners and visitors. Reports to the Command Sergeant.
JOB FUNCTIONS
- Ensures the safety and security of the jail and everyone in it.
- Books/processes new inmates, which includes fingerprinting and photographing inmates.
- Controls inmate movement and jail records/logs including housing assignments, meals, boards, and inmate rosters during each shift.
- Maintains control and discipline including use of physical restraint and restraining devices.
- Takes actions in suspected or obvious cases of medical emergencies.
- Receives and reviews a variety of information to include arrest reports, criminal histories, information on arrestees, personal information, warrants, on-views, victim notifications, teletype/hit confirmations, police reports, complaints, inmate ID information, SOP reports, TTY reports, shift reports and caution reports.
- Prepares and/or generates a variety of information to include medical histories, mental health histories, booking paperwork, bond sheets, money receipts, property sheets, disciplinary reports, incident reports, court report/list, jail rosters, nurse list, maintenance reports, medication logs, and release paperwork.
- Utilizes a variety of computer software such as Jail Pak, Gmail, Microsoft Word, Word Perfect, camera system, door lock system, internet, intercom, Baldwin County Jail View, fingerprinting software, and US Foods.
- Interacts and communicates with a wide variety of groups and individuals to include police officers, other public agencies, court magistrates, general public, inmates, Corrections Officers, Court Clerks, bonding companies, visitors, Chief of Police, Deputy Chief of Police, Lieutenant over jail, nurses, and the Chief Corrections Officer.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent
- Applicants should be 18 years of age or over
- Must hold a valid Driver's License
- Experience in a job related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provided the required knowledge, skills and abilities is a plus, but not required
- Successful applicant must be able to complete a physical agility obstacle course and be able to work shift work
