About the Role

Positions within this job family are assigned responsibilities for performing professional teaching work at the elementary or secondary level in a correctional institution or facility. This role applies special methods and techniques in the habilitation of inmates.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct classes in core academic areas to meet the individual needs of students.
  • Plan and lay out courses of study for subjects taught; instruct students; prepare and administer examinations; prepare various reports, including progress reports, daily attendance reports, weekly and end-of-month reports.
  • Devise and use special instructional materials or teaching aids for subjects taught in core academic areas; provide individual instruction, encouragement, counseling, and guidance to students as necessary.
  • Maintain classroom and corridor discipline; advise and assist in planning and supervising class and student club activities; prepare and grade examination papers.
  • Prepare reports on attendance, progress, and capabilities of each incarcerated student for administrative purposes.
  • Attend teachers’ meetings and participate in the planning, scheduling, and development of the school program.
  • Maintain inventory of books and supplies.
  • Participate in staff meetings and staff development training sessions; attend staffings to provide input on students’ progress.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Possession of a current Oklahoma Teaching Certificate (required upload).

Skills and Competencies

  • Knowledge: of modern principles, practices, and materials in the specialized field of education; of the content matter in the area of instruction; and of accepted methods of teaching students with specific individual needs.
  • Abilities: to supervise and instruct incarcerated students; to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; to organize and present facts and opinions clearly and concisely; and to develop and present a curriculum.

Pay

Statutory – salary is based on education and experience.

Schedule

Full-time, regular position.
