CORRECTIONAL SERGEANT

About the role

The Office of Correctional Safety (OCS) supports the mission of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) by protecting the public and serving CDCR’s investigative and security interests. OCS is the primary departmental link with allied law enforcement agencies and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (CalOES). OCS comprises the following sub‑units: Special Service Unit (SSU), Fugitive Apprehension Teams (FAT), Emergency Operations Unit (EOU), Emergency Planning and Management Unit (EPMU), Specialized Technology and Investigations Unit (STIU), Criminal Intelligence Analysis Unit (CIAU), and Investigative Training Unit (ITU). Under the direction of the Correctional Lieutenant, Special Service Unit – Gang Intelligence Operations (GIO), the incumbent conducts investigations of incarcerated people and supervised persons requesting to debrief (be identified as having discontinued their gang/security threat group (STG) affiliation) in accordance with CDCR policy. The incumbent determines whether a request is sincere or an attempt to manipulate the process to escape administrative actions related to gang/STG validation, interprets and applies applicable regulations, policies, and procedures, accurately documents, assesses, and reports evidential information, and clearly and objectively develops and presents compelling recommendations. Individuals eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position.

Responsibilities

• Conduct investigations of incarcerated people and supervised persons requesting to debrief (discontinue gang/STG affiliation).
• Determine if a debrief request is sincere or an attempt to manipulate the process to avoid administrative actions related to gang/STG validation.
• Interpret and apply applicable CDCR regulations, policies, and procedures throughout the debrief process.
• Accurately document, assess, and report evidential information gathered during investigations.
• Develop and present clear, objective, and compelling recommendations based on investigative findings.

Requirements

• Successful completion of a background investigation.
• Medical clearance prior to hire.
• Psychological evaluation clearance prior to hire.
• Quarterly proficiency course of fire: must pass with primary and other assigned firearms to maintain OCS assignment.

Pay

Salary range: $8,184.00 – $10,292.00 (A) / $8,696.00 – $10,935.00 (J). New‑to‑State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or the minimum of an alternate range when applicable.

Schedule

Permanent, full‑time position; in‑office work schedule; requires more than 50% travel.
