Job Summary

Iowa Medical and Classification Center serves as the reception and classification center for all those entering the adult male institutional corrections system. The Center operates a medium security general population unit and the only licensed forensic psychiatric hospital in the state. Additional units have been added to meet the increasing mental health and medical needs of the correctional population.

About the Role

The Security Controls/Control Center Operations, Facility Patrol, Perimeter Patrol, and Transportation/Escape Services positions at Iowa Medical and Classification Center are responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the facility and its residents. These roles involve monitoring security equipment, conducting patrols, transporting inmates, and interacting with the public and incarcerated individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor keys, radios, and other security equipment, fire system alarms, distress calls, and control of interior and exterior door locks.
  • Operate electronic doors, telephone systems, two-way radios, intercom, alarm systems, closed circuit TV systems, personal data assistants, computer terminals, and weapons/incarcerated individual control devices.
  • Patrol facilities and conduct security checks, incarcerated individual counts, inspections, and searches for contraband items.
  • Patrol the perimeter on a periodic basis, monitor vehicle traffic, and provide security, safety, and fire watch for all buildings on grounds.
  • Transport inmates on grounds and off-grounds, escort incarcerated individuals, visitors, and staff, and verify possession of appropriate passes or legal documents.
  • Interact with the general public, visitors, and victims in person or via phone in a professional and courteous manner, providing information, security, and assistance.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of core correctional practices, utilizing behavioral techniques to assist in the development of problem-solving skills, facilitating behavior change, role-playing, effective disapproval, providing positive reinforcement when appropriate, and instituting corrective measures through the effective use of disapproval.
  • Serve as a change agent when working with incarcerated individuals to prepare them for successful community reentry.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency.
  • Ability to successfully pass psychological tests, background investigations, post-offer health screens, and urinalysis screens.
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License and endorsements within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority at the time of hire.
