Correctional Officer

About the role

This non-sworn position, under the direction of the Sheriff and the general supervision of the Jail Administrator, performs a variety of duties related to the security, care, and custody of inmates.

Responsibilities

• Regularly and predictably report for work
• Maintain security and control in the jail
• Intervene to stop disturbances
• Administer first aid
• Conduct searches and inspections
• Perform surveillance of inmates
• Provide care and custody of inmates
• Prepare reports and other paperwork
• Work weekends, nights, holidays, and overtime as shift rotations dictate

Requirements

• At least 18 years of age
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid Wisconsin driver’s license
• No felony convictions
• Satisfactory completion of all required training during the time period established by the agency
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Experience with and knowledge of computers
• Ability to work in confined areas under stressful situations
• Must complete a one-year probationary period

Qualifications

• 120-hour jail certification is preferred but not required
