This is a lead worker position under general supervision that performs security duties at a Correctional Facility and holds the rank of Corporal.
About the role
Correctional Officers contribute to the public safety mission by providing for the safety and security of the public, staff, and inmates, ensuring the care, custody, and control along with compliance with policy and procedure. Officers in this class may serve as key control, tool control, armory officers, or transportation officers. These positions may also serve as entry-level K-9 handlers.
Officers provide security over adult inmates at a facility or work unit; supervise the daily activities of inmates while observing and recording their behavior and movement to ensure their safe and secure confinement. They interact with visitors, staff, inmates, and the public to maintain orderly and secure operations. The work involves a high degree of mental stress from constant contact with inmates. Travel may be required to perform duties in other DCR facilities.
Responsibilities
- Perform security duties at a Correctional Facility.
- Supervise daily activities of inmates and observe their behavior and movement.
- Serve as key control, tool control, armory, or transportation officer.
- Serve as an entry-level K-9 handler.
- Maintain safety and security of the public, staff, and inmates.
- Interact with visitors, staff, inmates, and the public to ensure orderly operations.
- Successfully complete the Academy training program.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience as a Correctional Officer, probation/parole officer, U.S. Military Service, police officer, or in a criminal justice or related field.
- Successfully completed coursework from an accredited college or university in corrections, criminal justice, or a related field may substitute for the required experience at the rate of one (1) year for every thirty (30) semester hours of study.
Conditions of Employment
- Successfully complete a psychological examination prior to appointment and as required thereafter.
- Successfully complete a medical examination prior to appointment and as required thereafter.
- Successfully complete a physical performance test prior to appointment and annually thereafter.
- Successfully complete a chemical urinalysis drug-screening test prior to initial employment.
- Subject to random drug testing and drug testing for reasonable suspicion as set forth in agency policy.
- Character and suitability for employment verified through an agency investigation prior to employment.
- Background must be clear of felony convictions.
- Background must be clear of any activity prohibited by the Prison Rape Elimination Act.
- Subject to recurring background checks as required by law, rule, standard, or policy.
- Work various shifts; schedules are subject to change at any time.
- Subject to mandatory overtime requirements and must be available for assignment to any location in the State of West Virginia.
- Possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment and continuously maintain such license while employed.
- Maintain a working telephone for agency contact.
- Successfully complete training as required by policies established by the Commissioner or as required by law, rule, or standard.
- Successfully complete a Supervisor Training Course within six (6) months of reallocation.
- All employees assigned to the K9 unit shall qualify with the agency-issued handgun, shotgun, and basic rifle prior to graduation from the Special Operations Basic Course and at least semi-annually thereafter.
Pay
Salary range: $34,247 - $58,936
Market Rate: $52,545
Special Hiring Rates as of 7/1/2024:
- $55,900.416 upon hire/reallocation - Critical Vacancy Pay Facilities (CVPF).
- $50,900.304 upon hire/reallocation - Remainder of the Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation facilities.
Additional Pay Information:
- Upon completion of the first year of continuous service, employees receive a retention incentive of $2,000.
- Annual base-building pay differential of $250 on July 1st, beginning July 1, 2024.
- If an employee leaves a Critical Vacancy Pay Facility (CVPF), the additional pay differential of $5,000 shall be removed unless transferring to another CVPF.

- 1-year probationary period.
