Location: Henning, TN – Department of Correction, Lauderdale County

Salary: $4,057.00 - $6,099.00 monthly ($48,684.00 - $73,188.00 annually)

Hiring bonus: $5,000.00 for Correctional Officers

Requirements

• Standard high school diploma or GED
• One (1) year of full-time experience as a Correctional Officer for the Tennessee Department of Correction (or equivalent adult correctional security work with a federal, state, or ACA-accredited local agency)
• Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age on the date of application
• U.S. citizenship
• Good moral character, as determined by investigation
• No felony convictions or dishonorable discharge from the U.S. armed forces
• Pass a criminal history disclosure and background check, including fingerprint-based TBI records check
• Pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical examination consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act
• Pass a psychological evaluation administered by a licensed mental health professional
• Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license at the time of appointment (required for some positions)
• Willing and able to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons
• Successfully complete a prescribed course of instruction at the Tennessee Correction Academy upon appointment

Responsibilities

• Supervise inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation, and work areas; attend to medical, visitation, personal property, and recreational needs of inmates
• Inspect and patrol grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and other security risks
• Process new inmates by assigning accommodations, searching for contraband, issuing clothing, and storing personal property
• Observe inmate behavior; counsel inmates and families about problems; evaluate inmates on hygiene, attitudes, and interactions; submit evaluations to the counseling department
• Attend staff meetings, disciplinary board meetings, and training for riot control, escape prevention, and first aid
• Prepare reports including daily logs, disciplinary reports, inmate job/pay records, daily inmate counts, and office supply requisitions
• Operate equipment such as two-way radios, firearms, mace, electronic gates, television cameras, and motor vehicles
• Ensure resident safety through daily activity supervision
• Intervene in fights or dangerous situations using persuasion or physical force as necessary

Schedule

Full-time. Most correctional security employees can expect to be assigned to any of three different work shifts and various post assignments. While employee preferences are considered, there is no guarantee of remaining on a specific shift or post.
