CORRECTIONAL OFFICER 2* - 08252026-80320
Location: Tiptonville, TN – Department of Correction, Lake County (5 positions). A Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) screening and criminal background check will be conducted prior to employment. Newly hired Correctional Officers are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus payable over an 18-month period. Hiring rate begins at $4,480 per month.
About the Role
The Correctional Officer 2 is responsible for correctional work of average difficulty and performs related duties. This is the working-level class in the Correctional Officer sub-series, involving the custody, transport, and rehabilitation of inmates. Assignments may include any shift and post within the facility.
Responsibilities
- Supervises inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation, and work areas; attends to medical, visitation, personal property, and recreational needs of inmates.
- Inspects and patrols grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and other security risks.
- Processes new inmates by assigning accommodations, searching for contraband, issuing clothing, and storing personal property.
- Observes inmate behavior; counsels inmates and families; evaluates inmates on hygiene, attitudes, and interactions; submits evaluations to the counseling department.
- Attends staff meetings, disciplinary board meetings, and training for riot control, escape prevention, and first aid.
- Prepares reports including daily logs, disciplinary reports, inmate job/pay records, daily counts, and supply requisitions.
- Operates equipment such as two-way radios, firearms, mace, electronic gates, television cameras, and motor vehicles.
- Ensures resident safety through daily supervision; intervenes in fights or dangerous situations using persuasion or physical force.
- Communicates and enforces existing policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Education equivalent to high school graduation and one year of full-time adult correctional security work (or equivalent experience with a federal, state, or ACA-accredited local agency).
- Qualifying full-time employment as a Correctional Officer with the State of Tennessee may substitute for required education on a year-for-year basis.
- Must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, and of good moral character (as determined by investigation).
- Must complete a criminal history disclosure form, agree to release records, and provide fingerprints for a TBI background check.
- No felony convictions or dishonorable discharge from the U.S. armed forces.
- Must pass a physical examination and psychological evaluation (ADA-compliant, related to essential job functions).
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license (for some positions).
- Must successfully complete training at the Tennessee Correction Academy.
- Willingness and ability to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons.
- Ability to work any shift or post assignment (preferences considered but not guaranteed).

Pay
Monthly: $4,057.00 – $6,099.00
Annual: $48,684.00 – $73,188.00
Schedule
Full-time. Employees may be assigned to any of three work shifts and various post assignments.
