Examples of Duties

  • Assigns, leads, checks, and performs general maintenance and repair work throughout County correctional facilities.
  • Makes work schedules and approves leave.
  • Receives repair requests.
  • Schedules and performs regular inspections of facilities and equipment.
  • Prepares estimates and reports of labor and materials costs.
  • Operates a vehicle to travel between facilities.
  • May transport workers or supplies to work sites.
  • May oversee contractual work.
  • May assist with security or large clean up operations in emergencies.

Qualifications

  • Four years' experience in building construction, maintenance, or repair work with at least one year's experience at the journeyman level in general building maintenance or a building trade.
  • Journeyman level knowledge of building maintenance and operations practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of building codes related to building maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of materials and procedures used in the building trades.
  • Skills in the operation and maintenance of building systems and equipment.
  • Skills in using manual and power tools and equipment required to perform routine repair and maintenance of building facilities, systems, and equipment.
  • Ability to understand and practice safety and security procedures for correctional facilities.
  • Ability to schedule, assist, and lead others in activities of building maintenance, renovation, installation, and repair.
  • Ability to maintain work records and prepare simple reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

Conditions of Employment

  • Attend correctional training courses offered by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission and other training as set forth by departmental policy.
  • Subject to call to duty and overtime in emergencies.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

  • Entails the performance of heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, climbing ladders, lifting and carrying of heavy objects, and the use of a full range of hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Requires travel between work sites and/or exposure to hazardous conditions such as adverse weather, electricity, chemicals, and bio-hazards, such as body fluids and sewage.
  • Work is performed in a fully operational correctional facility with all inherent hazards.

Salary
