Correctional Lieutenant

About the role

The role involves overseeing emergency preparedness and response training for Indiana Department of Correction teams, managing the facility's security and safety, and providing oversight and training to staff.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily inspections of the units.
• Track all incidents, properly vet, and report them to the Operations Center.
• Lead assigned staff in maintaining the security and safety of offenders, buildings, and grounds.
• Follow all policies and procedures related to facility’s operations and emergency preparedness.
• Provide input to supervisors on staff assignments, performance, corrective actions, and specific security issues with potential resolutions.
• Aid in identifying offender treatment needs and support programs for treatment and rehabilitation.
• Direct staff regarding the maintenance and cleanliness of the facility.
• Act as shift supervisor directing and coordinating daily operations utilizing a team of Correctional Sergeants and Officers.
• Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.
• Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees.
• Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

Requirements

• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Must test negative on all drug screenings.
• Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures, and practices utilized in a correctional environment.
• Ability to work mandatory/voluntary overtime.
• Ability to supervise and achieve desired results from offenders and staff.
• Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to apply as needed.
• Ability to communicate effectively, including giving clear directions.
• Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow.
• Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.

Qualifications

• Minimally articulate or demonstrate thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures, and practices utilized in a correctional environment.
• Have a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE).
• At least 3+ years of experience in corrections, law enforcement, or military law enforcement.
• 1 year experience as a correctional supervisory or supervisory training in related field.

Pay

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $53,222.00 but may be commensurate with education and work experience. Use our Compensation Calculator to view the total compensation package.
